Job Duties: This position will assist with all duties pertaining to the Shellfish Sanitation and Recreational Water Quality Section. However, the primary responsibility will be collecting and processing water samples from coastal swimming sites to determine if they meet Federal standards for recreational activities.
Major Task to be Performed: Daily collection of Water Quality samples at recreational swimming beaches and providing assistance processing those samples in the laboratory. Collection involves driving to various sites in the Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender, and Onslow County Beaches, as well as to Morehead City as needed. Time permitting, the intern will also assist with Shoreline Survey, Shellfish Growing Area sampling, and shellfish dealer inspections.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Aid the NC Recreational Water Quality Program in meeting the annual EPA sample collection requirements. Provide the intern valuable experience that will enhance their understanding of laboratory principals, environmental health principals, resource monitoring and management, and a good understanding of making regulatory decisions and any resulting impacts on stakeholders.
Academic Majors Desired: Will consider disciplines within the Biological Sciences, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Environmental Policy.
- An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
- Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2024.
- Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
- To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
- Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
