The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).
JOB SUMMARY:
Provides direct psychiatric care services related to diagnosis and treatment of patients, via digital medical services. Ensures that appropriate psychiatric health care is accessible and provided in a timely fashion, via digital medical services. Renders final medical judgement regarding psychiatric care provided to inmates assigned to their practice units, per approved UTMB - CMC treatment algorithms and practices. Works under the general direction of the UTMB - CMC, CHS medical director, with extensive latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgement.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Contribute to the success of the UTMB Correctional Managed Care operation.
- Provides direct psychiatric care to assigned patients.
- Regularly participates in clinical consultations with mental health and medical staff.
- Conducts psychiatric assessments and develops treatment plans for assigned patients.
- Performs complete medical/psychiatric histories and physical examinations; forms clinical impressions based upon findings; orders diagnostic tests, interprets results of laboratory tests and radiological examinations, prescribes medications, and renders treatments appropriate to clinical impressions, via digital medical services.
- Refers patients to specialists for consultations, evaluations, and treatments.
- Directly supervises all assigned mid level practitioners, providing oversight and review of the clinical practice in compliance with UTMB Correctional Managed Care policy and Texas law.
- Ensures telemedicine practice is appropriately managed, ensuring compliance with all applicable standards, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- May be required to provide emergency psychiatric call.
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure established for department.
- Performs related duties as required.
EQUIPMENT:
Standard office equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Located within the confines of a prison, jail or juvenile detention center. Security clearance is required; pre-employment drug testing is also required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Must hold a current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
- Eligible for Board Certification in Psychiatry.
- Must hold current Drug Enforcement Agency controlled substances registration.
- Residency training in psychiatry.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Digital medical services experience preferred.
Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
