General Description of Duties
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
This is a highly professional position responsible for leading and overseeing the development, promotion and sales of the destination to sports and events rights-holders for the purpose of securing/hosting numerous and varied state, regional, national, and international athletic competitions and championship events to increase the economic impact of sports tourism and increase awareness of Tallahassee/Leon County as a visitor destination. Sports tourism is a major, complex, and high-profile program with various activities and considerable contact with state, regional, national and international leaders to secure, develop, coordinate and host large public sporting events at numerous facilities and venues in the destination. This position leads the effort in hosting the World Athletics Cross Country Championships (WAXC) at ARP and all that international sports competition entails.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Manage/oversee all sports staff, sales and services functions; develop and manage the annual Sports budget, oversee the Sports Event Grant program, Tallahassee Sports Council, and establish the new WAXC Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
Establish/oversee/manage a 501c(3) LOC to execute WAXC, a major international competition, ensure delivery of all bid commitments, oversee sponsorship/revenue generation and budget management of world event.
Plan and execute cross country events and other sports events; develop/manage event budgets, invoice processing, and post-event analysis; supervise, direct and coordinate personnel, subcontractors, volunteers and vendors.
Manage/oversee existing/new sports events and lead new sports event development activities - prepare bids/proposals; coordinate site inspections; prepare and deliver effective sales presentations to site selection committees.
Attend sports-related trade shows and meetings to promote Tallahassee to the sports market; establish strong relationships with key officials and decision-makers of regional and national sports organizations, leagues, and associations.
Supervise/manage the Sports Events & Grants Manager
Support the Tallahassee Sports Council, overseeing procedures, actions, meetings; develop and manage the sports facility inventory in the destination; maintain/establish relationships with local, state, national governing bodies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of amateur sports and the amateur sports market.
Knowledge of the Tallahassee area and its sports facilities.
Knowledge of tourism and the workings of a destination management organization.
Knowledge of the Florida and regional competition.
Knowledge of direct sales best practices and the ability to implement them.
COMPLEXITY OF WORK
Employee must be able to operate in an independent manner when on the road at shows or when conducting sales missions or blitzes and must be able to use independent judgement in situations which may not fall within established procedures.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
Internal contact with department staff. Considerable external contact with industry stakeholders and customers.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED
Computer and various software programs including Internet Destination Sales System (IDSS) experience. Operation of a car and/or light truck.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work primarily indoors, outdoors and/or in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. May need to stoop/kneel/crouch/reach/stand for long periods of time. Requires regular walking and sitting for periods of time. Must be able to lift/push up to 20 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Event Management, Business Administration, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Prior CVB experience is preferred. Five to ten years of prior work experience. Microsoft Office knowledge and skills required.
Necessary Special Requirements:
A valid Florida Driver's License and a favorable driving record where appropriate.

FLSA STATUS: Administrative Exemption. Employee exercise discretion and independent judgment with regard to matters of significance, such as, but not limited to carrying out major assignments that involve assisting the Sports Marketing Manager in implementing and recommending policies related to the marketing of the Tallahassee Area as a visitors and tourist destination to the sports industry.
