Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 11,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 340 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.
Program Summary
The Community Programs department offers a comprehensive suite of integrated services aimed at eliminating barriers to attain and sustain equitable health, social, educational, housing, and economic outcomes. We serve youth, adults, and seniors through services that include: 1) school-based achievement and mentoring in middle and high schools and youth workforce development; 2) food security, housing access, and financial capability; and 3) services dedicated to enhancing the well-being of low-income residents and seniors. We deliver culturally rooted, multi-lingual services, providing vital support to residents in Oakland and throughout Alameda County.
Position Summary
The Special Projects Coordinator (SPC) will provide close support to the Community Programs Department, undertaking diverse projects and essential administrative tasks. This dynamic position involves coordinating service operations, refining program procedures, organizing events, actively engaging in community outreach activities, and leading Special Projects as assigned by the Director. A successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, strong communication abilities, and a passion for improving the health and social outcomes of underserved communities.
Responsibilities
- Lead Special Projects assigned by the Director, encompassing a range of areas such as outreach and promotion, research and planning, fostering relationships with internal and external partners, developing program manuals, and developing protocols and procedures to ensure efficient operations and compliance.
- Gather and analyze information to inform the creation of program materials, procedures, grant proposals and contracts.
- Assist the Food Security Team with scheduling the distribution of emergency prepared meals, conducting data entry and reporting tasks, and providing support during food distribution events.
- Act as a liaison between stakeholders on behalf of the Director, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
- Assist department managers in tracking expenses, facilitating purchase processes, and completing various related tasks.
- Collaborate closely with the Monitoring & Evaluation and Accounting Teams to provide support for monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and billing activities within the Community Programs Department.
- Manage meeting scheduling and coordinate events to ensure seamless operations.
- Prepare correspondence, briefing notes, meeting materials and agendas, maintaining professionalism, and a high attention to detail in all communications and materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in administrative, coordination, or customer service roles, demonstrating a proven track record of effectively managing tasks and responsibilities in a professional setting.
- Some experience in dynamic and community-centered services or social services is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring the successful coordination of multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to speak publicly and deliver presentations with confidence, effectively conveying information and engaging audiences with professionalism.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Essential functions
- Advanced computer skills with strong MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), social media skills and desktop publishing;
- Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopier, fax, etc.);
- Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, and occasionally stand and walk;
- Regularly required to use hands to operate computer and other office equipment;
- Must be able to climb stairs, reach, bend, lift occasionally 15-20 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, and twist.
