The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dynamic individual to plan, organize, promote, implement, and evaluate community events to include the Memorial Day Community Picnic and the 4th of July celebrations.
Under supervision of the Recreation Manager, this position will supervise personnel in planning and facilitating events and assist fellow Recreation Coordinators in completing departmental tasks or other special recreation functions.
This is a non-benefited, temporary position working 37.5 hours per week during from May 1 - September 1, 2024. This position will be expected to work scheduled holidays, nights, and weekends. Rate of pay begins at $27.14 per hour.

- Two (2) year minimum background working in events or related field.
- An understanding of the role of OSHA, ADA, and DEC in the area of recreation.
- Experience working with multiple agencies.
- Valid State Driver's License.
- Must be able to pass a background check. Individuals in this position cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect complaint.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement community events to include but are not limited to the Memorial Day Community Picnic and 4th of July Celebration.
- Identify community needs, preferences, and resources, e.g., plan and conduct surveys.
- Assess event outcomes and modify as needed to meet community needs.
- Work closely with other city departments during the event planning process.
- Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate event support staff.
- Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Analyze event trends and patterns; incorporate industry standards and best practices.
- Collaborate with fellow Recreation Coordinator on developing and implementing events.
- Manage event operations before, during and after an event.
- Perform various public relations duties: respond to public inquiries; prepare program marketing for various mediums, including brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, social media.
- Perform various administrative duties, e.g., answers phones, operates copy machine, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

- City and Department policies and procedures.
- Principles and techniques of recreation planning, facilitation, and management.
- Staff hiring requirements and training techniques.
- Emergency first aid and CPR techniques.
- Recreation risk/legal management.
- Prioritizing and executing multiple tasks and projects.
- Event planning and organization.
- Managing public relations and community programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in various Parks and Recreation venues.
- May be subject to frequent standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs).
- Employee must be able to work in an outdoor environment in inclement weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- An understanding of the role of OSHA, ADA, and DEC in the area of recreation.
- Experience working with multiple agencies.
- Valid State Driver's License.
- Must be able to pass a background check. Individuals in this position cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect complaint.
- Must obtain and maintain CPR, and first aid certification within one (1) month of hire.
- Must demonstrate an understanding of and the necessity for staff training manuals, emergency action plans, risk management, and liability mitigation.
- Must obtain and maintain necessary certifications as they relate to assigned duties.
