Encodia is a rapidly growing platform company that is developing a new generation of protein analysis tools based on single-molecule protein sequencing. Our goal is to make protein sequencing easy and ubiquitous by using a novel reverse-translation technology that turns peptide sequences into DNA. The DNA can be read by a DNA sequencer, providing a path to breakthrough proteomics research at a scale that is not practical or cost-effective using current technologies.
Encodia is currently seeking an experienced Chemical Biologist with a deep understanding of chemistry, bioconjugation, biochemistry, protein structure, and protein interactions. A successful candidate will enable the team to scope the materials, reagent, and assay workflow design space using novel biological chemistries, bioconjugate materials, and analytical and biophysical characterization techniques. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with experience applying innovative chemical biology solutions to develop complex assay systems.
Requirements
Your principal responsibilities will include:
- Improve Encodia’s proteomic sequencing technology through the development of materials, reagents, and workflows requiring chemical biology
- Prepare and characterize bioconjugates consisting of small molecules, peptides, proteins, and DNA using state-of-the-art synthesis, bioconjugation, purification, analytical, and biophysical techniques
- Effectively communicate scientific rationale, results, and interpretation, and contribute to strategic discussions
- Engage in cross-functional collaboration with assay, protein engineering, and instrument engineering teams
- Contribute to the Encodia’s strategic direction and IP portfolio
- Other such matters that may be determined by Encodia’s management
What you bring to this role:
- PhD or equivalent in chemistry or closely related field; 5 - 8+ years of industry experience
- Experience in assay, reagent, and workflow development requiring chemical biology
- Strong understanding of chemistry, biochemistry, protein structure, protein interactions (protein/protein, protein/peptide, protein/DNA) and associated analytical and biophysical characterization techniques
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
- Proficient in all aspects of protein production, peptide synthesis, bioconjugation, purification and analysis; capable of independent laboratory work including solid- and solution-phase protein/peptide chemistry and using Mass Spectrometry for analysis
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team effectively
- Aligns experimental plans with project goals with input from team
- Assimilates data and research findings into projects
- Creative thinker with ability to generate novel solutions and troubleshoot complicated systems
- Anticipates problems/risks and plans for mitigations
- Thrives in fast-paced startup environment
- Track record of accomplishments in academic and industrial setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Highly desirable:
- Background in proteomics and sample preparation
- Familiarity with protein production, enzyme evolution, activity assays, multiplexed assays, and/or systems integration
- Implements DOE methodology to design experiments
- Background in small molecule synthesis and characterization is a plus
- Experience with product development processes (PDP)
