Senior Network and Telecom Engineer
Summary
The Senior Network and Telecom Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the University's network infrastructure, with a specific focus on Extreme Networks equipment and VoIP telecommunication systems. The ideal candidate should possess deep technical expertise in network design, configuration, and troubleshooting, along with a strong understanding of VoIP solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Network Design and Implementation:
- Design, configure, and maintain Extreme Networks switches and routers to ensure a secure and efficient network infrastructure.
- Plan and implement network upgrades and expansions, considering scalability and performance requirements.
- Implement adds, moves, and changes as needed on the wired network.
- Investigate, test, and remediate network endpoint connections.
- VoIP Telecommunication Systems:
- Manage VoIP telecommunication systems, including call processing, voice mail, and contact center solutions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve VoIP-related issues, ensuring high call quality and availability.
- Maintain and configure as necessary analytic reporting.
- Network Security:
- Implement and maintain network security policies and procedures to protect against threats and vulnerabilities.
- Monitor and respond to security incidents and perform regular security assessments.
- Performance Optimization:
- Monitor network performance and proactively address issues to ensure optimal network operation.
- Optimize network configurations to maximize performance and minimize downtime.
- Monitor WiFi network KPI's and take corrective action as necessary.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain comprehensive network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and standard operating procedures.
- Generate reports on network performance, availability, and security.
- Collaboration and Support:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business-critical applications and projects.
- Provide technical support and mentorship to junior team members.
- Vendor Management:
- Coordinate with vendors for equipment procurement, support, and service contracts.
- Evaluate new technologies and recommend hardware and software upgrades as needed.
- Compliance and Best Practices:
- Ensure network infrastructure compliance with industry best practices, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends in networking and VoIP.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience of 10 years or more).
- Experience in designing, implementing, and managing network infrastructure.
- Proficiency in VoIP telecommunication systems and call center solutions.
- Strong knowledge of network protocols, security principles, and best practices.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of constituencies essential.
- A demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people.
- Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in Avaya VoIP telecommunication systems and call center solutions.
- Extensive experience in designing, implementing, and managing network infrastructure, with a focus on Extreme Networks equipment.
- Certification in relevant areas, such as Extreme Networks (e.g., ECSE, ENA) and Avaya (e.g., ACIS, ACSS).
- Project management experience.
Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
This position works in-person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio, generally 37.5 hours per week as assigned. This position may require that work be performed outside of normal business hours when necessary. This position may also require significant project work based on institutional need outside of the primary areas of responsibility.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary will be $70,000 - $90,000, commensurate with qualifications.
