Job description

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU-NC) seeks to hire an experienced Human Resources leader for a newly created position - Senior Manager for People and Culture. The person in this position will serve on the organization’s senior leadership team, working out of our office in Raleigh. We are looking for an emotionally intelligent and dynamic team player with expertise in:

  • Performance management;
  • Employee relations and engagement;
  • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging;
  • HR policy and procedure development and implementation; and compliance.

The Senior Manager for People and Culture will report directly to the Executive Director.

Who We Are

Founded in 1965, the ACLU-NC is an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union. We are a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that stands as the state’s guardian of liberty – working in courts, the General Assembly, and communities to protect and advance civil rights and civil liberties for all North Carolinians.

The ACLU-NC brings together litigation, legislative, advocacy, communications, and organizing strategies to empower communities and achieve our objectives in major issue areas, including criminal law reform, racial justice, LGBTQ equality, reproductive freedom, and immigrants’ rights. With nearly 30,000 members and supporters across the state, the ACLU-NC has more than 20 people on staff, with a central office in Raleigh and a satellite office in Charlotte.

What You’ll Do

The Senior Manager for People and Culture works across the organization to lead, alongside the senior leadership team, to provide a vision for the ACLU-NC’s human resources program. This position is the affiliate’s first HR role. As such, the position is primarily responsible for codifying an HR infrastructure and introducing best practices that allow the organization to deliver people-centered processes regarding HR administration, recruitment and onboarding, employee relations and retention, training and development, and workplace culture practices. With a newly unionized workforce, the Senior Manager for People and Culture will serve as the point person for management for ensuring compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate will be ready to hit the ground running and execute their duties with a high degree of emotional intelligence, confidentiality, and collaboration and a proven ability to build and sustain relationships. The Senior Manager for People and Culture is a true ‘people person’ with an intense passion for supporting great teams and helping them thrive.

Specific ‘Must-Haves” Include:

  • Experience and demonstrable ability to work closely and productively with people from various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds;
  • Experience with or willingness to learn about harm reduction strategies and trauma-informed practices;
  • Experience with restorative justice;
  • Demonstrable understanding of issues affecting constituencies of the ACLU-NC, including but not limited to anti-Blackness, structural racism, and gender policing;
  • An advanced ability to maintain absolute confidentiality, exercise sound independent judgment, and exhibit high levels of integrity and discretion.
  • An ability to establish credibility and be decisive while maintaining positive employee relationships in service to the mission;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of employment law and compliance requirements and HR best practices;
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing HR policies and programs - SHRM, HRCI, or similar HR certification;
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and advising management and staff in an HR capacity; and,
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.

What Else Should You Know?

You are welcome here! The ACLU-NC is committed to an inclusive work environment that reflects the population that we serve. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building an organization where all employees and North Carolinians can be proud. We eagerly anticipate applications from all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, marital status, citizenship, disability, parental status, veteran status, or record of arrest or conviction. The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include paid time off, generous paid holidays, medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k retirement plan, life insurance, and short-term and long-term disability insurance.

What Now?

Review the full position description then submit a resume and cover letter to Stephanie Palazzo at Spalazzo@acluofnc.org (mailto:Spalazzo@acluofnc.org) with “Senior Manager for People and Culture – Last Name, First Name” in the subject line of the email.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will be accepted until the position is filled.

The ACLU-NCLF is an equal opportunity employer. We value a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture. Recognizing that strict minimum requirements tend to disproportionately discourage women and people of color from applying for jobs for which they would otherwise be competitive, we encourage all qualified individuals to apply – especially people of color; women; people from low-income backgrounds; people with disabilities; people who identify as LGBTQI+; and people who are formerly incarcerated or otherwise directly impacted by the criminal legal system.
