Overview

SUMMARY  

Paragon Professional Services, LLC (Paragon), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC), is seeking an experienced geologist to support a wide range of environmental projects from its Folsom, California office. The qualified candidate should be safety conscious, motivated, and hardworking with an understanding of geological field techniques and the many aspects of working on sites involving contaminated soil, soil vapor, groundwater, sediment, and surface water. Primary duties will include direction of junior geologists, field work for the collection of samples; providing data analysis, research, and technical consultation; preparing planning documents; and preparing various field data summaries and interpretative reports.  The position will provide the successful candidate opportunities to travel and work outdoors in exciting project locations including on Federal lands and facilities in California, Alaska, and at other locations nationwide.

$95,000 - $130,000/year

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES  

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.  Other duties may be assigned.  

  • Perform oversight, training, mentorship and direction for junior and intermediate level geologists in the field and in the office, under supervision of the Principal Geologist
  • Perform field work as assigned
  • Oversee drilling and other subcontractors
  • Perform lithologic logging of soil to USCS standards and interpretation of geologic depositional environments and hydrogeologic conditions
  • Perform sampling of environmental media (soil, soil vapor, groundwater, sediment, surface water, etc.) 
  • Perform data collection and documentation related to field activities 
  • Travel to project locations including driving, air travel, and overnight stays 
  • Analysis and interpretation of field data 
  • Update/prepare work plans 
  • Prepare boring logs, implementation reports, and other technical reports 
  • Data entry and QA/QC of data tables, figures, and reports
  • Provide senior review of work plans, data reports, boring logs, and other documents prepared by junior staff
  • Project management and subcontractor procurement
  • Preparation of technical approach summaries and cost estimates for proposals
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in geology, geosciences, or equivalent from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum eight (8) to ten (10) years of experience in environmental investigation and remediation activities including borehole logging, environmental sample collection, reporting, project management, proposal preparation and business development 
  • Willing and able to travel, with up to a 60/40 field-to-office based ratio to support multiple projects and train junior geologists
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Significant drilling oversight experience, including hollow stem auger, DPT, and sonic rigs  
  • Experience designing, developing, and sampling groundwater monitoring wells 
  • Experience developing UFP-QAPP and other Federal project documents
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record 
  •  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics  

  • Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy, and strong attention to detail 
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Scoping of environmental site investigations
  • Field program management
  • Technical data analysis, conceptual site model development and contamination delineation
  • Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks simultaneously 
  • Ability to perform quality control functions during site work 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with the ability and desire to lead tasks 
  • Strong work ethic with flexibility to work outside normal business hours and/or in unfavorable weather conditions
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite   

Preferred  

  • Licensed Professional Geologist in California
  • Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 
  • HAZWOPER 40-hr Training (current)
  • GIS, CAD, or OpenGround software
  • Lysimeter installation and porewater sampling
  • Vapor intrusion assessment and mitigation

 

NECESSARY PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods of time; most of time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about. Significant amount of time will be in the field with potential for temperature extremes (heat or cold).  Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs and ability to climb stairs or ladders is required. 

DOT COVERED/SAFETY-SENSITIVE ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is not subject to federal requirements regarding Department of Transportation "safety-sensitive" functions. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

This position is primarily a field position (approximately 60%) that may transition to the office environment over time, depending on the professional goals of the successful candidate. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Supervision of subcontractors or vendors
  • Junior scientists, engineers and geologists on field assignments

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS  

As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base or other secure facility.  Must have reliable transportation to/from work and must be able to obtain access to military installations.  Due to the nature of this work, U.S. Citizenship is required (for work at DOD installations or other federal facilities with restricted access).
