The Senior Financial Analyst (FP&A) provides financial processing, tracking, reporting, and analysis support for the Digital Solutions and Learning Tools product lines of APA Publishing, including the following departments: Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Content Management, and the Strategic Investment Fund (SIF). This position also works closely with the Director of Business Planning to provide sales reporting and KPI reporting through automated dashboards and ad hoc reporting via Salesforce, the budget system (Business Solver) and the General Ledger (Business Central). The incumbent should be able to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, research data, and provide the team with data forecasted analytic findings. This position requires the ability to work independently, synthesize complex data, and to have expert knowledge in analytics, financial modeling, and data visualization. The incumbent will build, review, and enhance revenue and expense models.
Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree required in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance.
- 5 years of experience in data gathering/analysis budgeting/finance, and/or business analysis.
- Comfortable working with large amounts of data.
- Should have a high drive to understand the factors driving the numbers being reported. Having a high level of curiosity would greatly benefit you in this role.
- Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, as you will be tasked with regularly communicating financial results and financial variances/metrics to senior management and must be able to articulate the key business metrics/drivers.
- Willingness to take initiative, know what needs to be done, and execute with a sense of urgency, discipline and focus.
Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.
Computer Skills Required:
- Strong Excel skills (creating spreadsheets and using advanced formulas)
- Some experience with General Ledger software such as Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or Business Central preferred
- Intermediate PowerPoint skills
- Prior accounting experience would be a plus
- Salesforce experience is a plus
Responsibilities:
- Develops and/or improves financial modeling tools and operational metrics for sales and revenue/expense analysis, forecasting across multiple product lines.
- Assists in preparing a monthly financial package for APA Publishing management reporting year-to-date revenue vs prior year and budget, as well as documenting key take-aways from the financial report. Makes connections between results and key metrics by providing a detailed, but concise explanation around performance and forward-looking projections. Works with various stakeholders to consistently improve the reporting metrics, particularly out of Salesforce.
- Serves as key individual in the annual preparation of the annual Digital Solution and Learning Tool revenue budget. Works closely with the Senior Director of Sales and Marketing in vetting the revenue budget and its assumptions.
- Takes a lead in preparing the annual expense budgets for various departments. Works closely with senior management in deriving valid assumptions in building these expense budgets. Works with the Budget office to ensure the budget data is accurately loaded into the Budget system (Business Solver).
- Prepares and distributes monthly expense reports to managers and directors in charge of Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Content Management, and the Strategic Investment Fund. Identifies variances to budget and prior year and highlights key areas of concern.
- Identifies areas where expenses may be miscoded. Works with Accounting to get those expenses recategorized to the proper program and/or account.
- Work closely with the Director of Business Planning in the preparation of bi-annual revenue and expense reforecasts for the aforementioned areas for which this position is responsible. Must be able to analyze large quantities of data, primarily renewal data, make retention estimates, price increase estimates, and be able to provide a solid reforecast upon which business decisions will be made.
- Assists in administering commission plans for sales team. Calculates quarterly and annual commission eligibility and amounts for each member of Sales who is eligible for a commission.
- Provides various ad hoc reporting as required, including but not limited to sales by vendor, by region, by country, etc.
- Calculate retention rates and new sales (both quantity of customers and value of contracts) for subscribers of digital databases.
- Other duties as assigned.
