Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the unit, and the Michigan Public Health Code, the Registered Nurse serves as an advanced clinical resource to patients, families, and staff in the delivery of care to all patients. Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to provide a continuum of comprehensive cost-effective care. Monitors outcomes as a process of continuous improvement. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
This nursing position is specific to Radiation Oncology, which is a 5 day a week day position with no weekend or holidays.

  • Associates degree, Diploma, or Bachelor of Science from an Accredited Nursing Program prior to employment, and
  • Successful completion of Hospital, Core, and Department specific orientation based upon unit and experience level.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan
  • BLS competency required by completion of core orientation.
  • Critical care or Advanced Life Support is required for some RN staff nurses (unit specific)
  • Cancer Basics completed within a 1000 hours worked
  • Radiation Oncology ONS/ONCC Radiation therapy certificate course completed by 18 months.
  • OCN completed by 3 years.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Provides health-related education and counseling for patients.
a. Assesses/educates patients weekly for treatment-related side effects, which include:
i. Skin care concerns (xeroderma, erythema, moist desquamation, lymphedema, mucositis, etc.) Appendix J: Job Description Examples1
ii. Nutritional problems such as changes in or loss of appetite that result in excessive weight loss as a result of nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
iii. Fatigue.
iv. Other problems such as psychosocial issues like depression, coping with illness, etc.
v. Pain.
b. Notifies the radiation oncologist if any patient needs a break from treatment due to side effects caused from radiation and/or chemotherapy.
• Demonstrates expertise in Radiation Oncology nursing practice.
• Demonstrates an understanding of research protocols, clinical trials, and chemotherapy treatment protocols.
• Demonstrates an understanding and supports the client with palliative treatment
• Knowledgeable regarding treatment to patients diagnosed with cancer or related disease. Acts as a highly effective and capable educator and researcher.
• Accurately and effectively teaches patients and caregivers regarding possible side effects of radiation. Counsels and advises patients of symptom management during therapy and provides education on basic nutritional needs. Accurately documents patient and family involvement and education.
• Considers the physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age specific and educational needs of the patient in the plan of care. Plans care in collaboration with multidisciplinary team.
• Accurately performs comprehensive assessments according to patient needs, reporting abnormal findings to physician.
• Accurately documents lab work, diagnostic studies, care plan implementation, nursing interventions, patient status, and patient response to treatment.
• Implements medical and nursing orders in safe and prompt manner. Maintains current knowledge of equipment utilized.
• Handles FMLA, disability, and other paperwork, obtains physician signatures, and returns pertinent paperwork accordingly.
• Ability to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, keyboard skills, presentation programs, and other software relevant to the job
• Ability to handle multiple priorities in a stressful environment
• Ability to communicate in a manner that patients and family find understandable, collaborative and supportive
• Demonstrates diverse critical global thinking, decision making and problem-solving abilities Effectively communicates, negotiates, influences, uses sound judgment and follows up on situations/issues in a timely, appropriate manner
• Demonstrates ability to assess, prioritize, plan, organize, monitor, and evaluate patient needs and skill level
• Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for patient safety
• Anticipates patient's needs and works to quickly resolve
• Works cooperatively with the health care team and takes responsibility for ensuring smooth, efficient transition of care between services.
• Acts as a liaison between patients, physicians, ancillary and community services throughout the entire patient experience from diagnosis to post-discharge to ensure effective healthcare management and delivery of transitional services
• Builds and maintains strong collegial relationships with physicians, nursing team and leaders to provide quality of care.
• Participates actively in assigned groups and committees
• Completes referral process for visiting nurse services and Hospice.
• Clinical skills include but not limited to: Starting IV's, accessing ports, skin care, dressing changes, including trachea dressings, suctioning & care, administration of medications, including oral, IM, Sub-Q and IV, insertion of Foley catheters, obtaining vital signs, and administering oxygen therapy.
• Willingly participates in the performance improvement process, identifying problems and facilitating solutions identification and implementation.
• Orders creams, dressings and office supplies as needed to stock.
• Seeks and maintains knowledge of radiation treatment and procedures as detailed in the policy and procedure guidelines.
• Coordinates care with all involved healthcare providers including in Medical, GYN Oncology, Surgeon, Urology, and ENT as needed
• Preparation of procedural areas, assuring supplies are stocked and safety equipment in place.
• Assists during procedures per physician needs. Performs special procedures accurately and efficiently as assigned.
• Implements medical and nursing orders in a safe and prompt manner.
• Perform all other duties as required and assigned.
Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action.
Under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist and Physicist will assist in the administration of Radiopharmaceuticals(either orally or intravenously) in accordance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Bronson policies.
Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
