Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE
The Senior Designer specializing in New Product Introduction will play a pivotal role in driving innovation and excellence in the design of cutting-edge heat rejection equipment for global markets. The primary purpose is to lead the design efforts from concept to product launch, utilizing design automation tools and techniques in accordance with BAC and industry standards.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Required Knowledge/Skills:
- Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, etc.)
- Proficiency in sheet metal design, with the ability to create detailed and accurate sheet metal drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with bill of material (BOM) creation, ensuring accurate documentation of components and materials required for manufacturing.
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA), ensuring efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Leadership experience with a track record of guiding and mentoring junior designers in the pursuit of excellence in new product design.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT), ensuring precision and accuracy in design specifications.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a creative mindset to overcome design challenges in the dynamic context of new product development.
- Familiarity with Scrum methodologies and experience in organizing and managing design projects using Scrum principles.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills:
- Autodesk Inventor & Vault
- SAP or equivalent ERP system
- Basic programming (e.g., Python, Visual Basic)
- Design of plastic components for injection molding or extrusion
- Industrial refrigeration / HVAC components and assemblies
Required Experience/Certification:
- Technical certificate or Associate degree with 5+ year experience (6000 hours experience in 3D design) or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field with 2+ years of experience
NATURE & SCOPE
The Senior Designer reports directly to the Design Team Lead. He or she will collaborate with engineers, designers, and other cross-functional team members to support the launch of NPI programs globally.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
All Groups:
- Spearhead the design and development of cutting-edge heat rejection equipment through innovative design automation tools and techniques.
- Implement and optimize design automation processes to accelerate new product development, ensuring agility and efficiency in the design lifecycle.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and product marketing to integrate new products into the marketplace.
- Utilize 3D CAD software to create parametric models for the rapid generation of designs.
- Conduct regular design reviews with stakeholders, identifying areas for improvement and implementing enhancements to drive continuous innovation.
- Provide regular presentations to stakeholders and leadership regarding project progress
- Work closely with team members to define design parameters, establish timelines, and achieve critical milestones in the dynamic landscape of new product development.
- Utilize Scrum methodologies to organize and manage the iterative development of new heat rejection equipment, ensuring a collaborative and adaptive approach.
- Participate in discussions to present innovative design solutions, gather specific requirements for new products, and address any modifications.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Travel periodically to BAC manufacturing facilities during prototype or pilot assembly and assist with prototype/pilot build.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- BAC has flex work policy – 3 days in office and 2 days remote.
- Working hours are the standard BAC 40 hours per week (8:30am-5:00pm with flexible start/finish times allowed)
- Travel, both domestic and international can be up to 10% of the time
- Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required, although can often be done from home with the use of a portable computer.
- Primarily Sedentary Activity in the office will be experienced; however occasional travel to BAC manufacturing facilities and R&D lab with assembly (medium work) is required.
- The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform 3D computer modeling
- The worker will typically be subjected to only indoor conditions; however on occasional trips to BAC manufacturing facilities and R&D lab, the worker may experience heat, cold, humidity, and noise.
