TITLE:School Nurse
REPORTS TO: Principal and Assistant Superintendent for Federal Programs and Operations
LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: 9 months (187 days)
SUMMARY: School nurses oversee the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students. School nurses also manage students who have chronic health conditions and students with disabilities. This includes giving them medication as needed and working with parents and teachers to create and enforce care plans. School nurses perform a critical role within the school health program by addressing the major health problems experienced by children. This role includes providing preventive and screening services, health education and assistance with decision-making about health, and immunization against preventable diseases. Provide leadership, community/public health, care coordination, quality improvement.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school age children.
2. Provides health assessments such as vision, hearing, dental, and scoliosis as well as EPSDT screening and initiates referrals to parents, school personnel or community resources on abnormal findings.
3. Develops and implements a health plan and maintains complete and accurate records per HIPAA guidelines.
4. Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual students, including Asthma Action Plans and Immunization Compliance Forms.
5. Provides treatment for minor illness and injury within the standard of nursing care and School Nurse protocol as per school district standing orders and parental permission.
6. Administers daily medication that must be given during school hours with physician order and signed parental permission form.
7. Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for illness and injuries.
8. Promotes and assists in control of communicable diseases.
9. Provides age-appropriate counseling and education to students concerning such issues as abstinence, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol/substance abuse, nutrition, hygiene and physical fitness in order to facilitate responsible decision making.
10. Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a health professional liaison between home, school and community.
11. Provides consultation in the form of health policies, goals and objectives and assist with school Wellness Policy as needed.
12. Participates in IEP Plan development as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Mississippi and is licensed by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.
2. Certified in CPR.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Environment: Standard office and school settings to include classrooms, gyms, libraries, cafeterias, and recreational areas; moderate travel; exposure to potentially stressful environments; regularly perform inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical: Sufficient physical ability to perform moderate lifting up to 20 pounds; regularly required to walk, sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; may require climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction; the noise level in the work environment is moderate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of nursing principles and practices, specifically for pediatric and adolescent nursing.
2. Knowledge of state health regulations, local laws, and school policies relating to health.
3. Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health.
4. Knowledge of Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District policies and procedures including student and employee handbooks.
5. Ability to work with diverse groups including students of all ages as well as parents, staff, health care providers, and community members.
6. Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, with others to exchange information.
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records at all times.
8. Ability to assess situations and act quickly.
9. Possess planning, organization, and time management skills.
