Description of Position: The School Nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The School Nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disabilities and the early detection and correction of health problems. The School Nurse promotes and protects the health status of students and staff through functions in all areas of Coordinated School Health.
HEALTH SERVICES
Provide health assessments
- Obtain a health history
- Screen and evaluate vision, hearing, scoliosis, dental and others as directed
- Observe students as required for development and health patterns/concerns
- Participate in school registration process to procure parental consent and health insurance information
- Maintain a confidential cumulative health record for each student
- Interpret the health status of students to parents and school personnel
- Initiate and follow referrals for intervention and/or remediation
- Plan and implement health management protocols and modification of school programs and environment
- Administer appropriate level of first aid for illness and injury, including CPR
- Administer/supervise medication and monitor the effects
- Provide individual health counseling concerning high-risk behaviors
- Perform skilled nursing functions
Provide health education for students, staff and parents
- Coordinate and participate in student support groups and activities
- Promote and interpret health careers which may include participation of school in allied health programs
- Teach health topics as outlined in the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Framework which will include but not be limited to tobacco, alcohol and substance abuse prevention
- Participate in health curriculum planning and evaluation
- Promote drop-out prevention programs
- Recommend provisions for a safe, healthy school environment
- Serve on school committees to develop and implement safety programs
- Promote and assist in control of communicable diseases
- Ensure that each student complies with the immunization requirements of the State of Mississippi
- Confirm that students have medical emergency cards on file
- Participate in wellness projects
- Promote healthy physical education, sports policies and practices
- Serve as a health resource to the physical education staff
- Support healthy food service programs
- Serve as a health resource to school food service staff
- Provide crisis intervention for emotional/physical disturbances
- Counsel students as needed
- Screen and counsel school employees as needed
- Administer/provide influenza vaccinations for staff upon request
- Provide staff with in-service training programs on health-related issues
FAMILY/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
- Work with agencies and civic clubs in providing assistance to indigent children
- Make home visits as necessary
COLLECT DATA AS ESTABLISHED BY THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION/OFFICE OF HEALTHY SCHOOLS AND REPORT TO SAME ENTITY MONTHLY.
ATTEND ANNUAL TRAINING MEETING SPONSORED BY THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION/OFFICE OF HEALTHY SCHOOLS
PERFORM OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BY THE OFFICE MANAGER/SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Possess a valid Mississippi Nursing License (RN)
- Possess a minimum of three years of work experience in the health care area
- Possess good verbal and written communication skills
- Possess organizational and time management skills, and the ability to communicate well with children, parents, school faculty and administration
- Possess the ability to work independently according to all nursing practice standards
- Pass a criminal background and child abuse registry check
• Knowledge of foreign languages is a plus, but not a requirement.
• A baccalaureate degree is preferred
