1. Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Mississippi
2. Hold an unrestricted license
3. Certified in CPR or BLS, or will obtain in the first twelve months of hire
4. Minimum of five years experience in nursing profession, including experience in trauma and/or
pediatrics
5. Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred
6. National Certified School Health Nurse is preferred

JOB GOAL
1. To support the Mission and Beliefs of the District when carrying out duties and responsibilities as
assigned
2. To establish standards of health care for school children and provide the best available nursing care;
provide support to students via the physical, emotional/psychological, and social areas to ensure
students' safety and health; promote the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of
students
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Be knowledgeable of the applicable practice laws and regulations for the school nurse to practice
within the scope of the RN license
2. Work closely with principals, teachers, teacher assistants, office personnel, and other staff in order to
carry out a wide range of school health activities
3. Exercise professional judgment in making decisions
4. Utilize appropriate communication techniques with students, school personnel, parents, and the
community
5. Provide preventive health services to facilitate the student's optimal physical, mental, emotional, and
social growth and development
6. Identify problems and disabilities and provide such services as case examination, health education,
referral and care in order to help prevent serious health problems which would later be more difficult
and costly to address
7. Support the educational process by working to assure the health of the students
8. Follow standard nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning,
implementation, and evaluation, in all cases
9. Provide health assessments
10. Obtain health histories
11. Screen and evaluate findings of deficiencies in areas such as, vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth
12. Identify abnormal health findings
13. Develop and implement a health plan
14. Interpret the health status of students to parents/guardians, and school personnel

15. Initiate referrals to parents/guardians, school personnel or community health resources for
intervention, remediation and follow-through
16. Oversee development and implementation of the Health and Wellness Plan
17. Develop procedures for and execute emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses and in
disaster preparedness and response
18. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases
19. Provide direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making
decision on health and on lifestyles that affect health
20. Counsel students concerning health problems in order to facilitate responsible decision-making
practices
21. Coordinate school and community health activities and serve as a liaison health professional between
the home, school, and community
22. Provide consultation in the formation of health policies, goals, and objectives for the school district
23. Participate in Individual Education Plan development, when requested
24. Report communicable diseases as directed by state guidelines
25. Collaborate with local physician to develop and sign-off on Standing Orders on an annual basis
26. Performs other duties as assigned
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
187 days annually with salary as approved by the Board of Trustees
EVALUATION
Performance of school nurse will be evaluated by each building principal in accordance with provision of
Board policy
