Job Title: School-Based Children Therapist ( Level VII )
Title of Immediate Supervisor: Director of Child and Family Services

Position Description:
  • This exempt (FLSA) position's incumbent provides individual, group and family therapy services to high-risk children and their families within the Mecklenburg County public school system.
  • This includes supportive counseling, needs assessments, referrals to emergency services and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Promotes acquisition of skills in a variety of developmental areas, including cognitive processes and social interaction; provides curriculum planning to achieve the IFSP's planned outcome, and provides families with information and support related to enhancing the skill development of targeted population.
  • Ensures service plans are developmentally sensitive, trauma informed and child centered, family focused.
  • Ensures documentation is timely, accurate and in compliance with all regulatory agencies while maintaining effective relationships with the courts, schools, social services and other appropriate agencies.
  • This position works the schedule for SBH and provides services both in person and via telehealth as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (TASKS AND DUTIES):

1. Provides outpatient individual therapy and group therapy to Seriously Emotionally Disturbed (SED) or at-risk children, adolescents (ages 3 (5) -18) and their families within the public school system of Mecklenburg County, SBH outpatient clinic and in the community as needed. .

2. Completes assessments and evaluations of all service needs of assigned clientele, including those in crisis.

3. Develops and completes client Individual Service Plans (ISPs) consistent with assessment evaluations that are developmentally sensitive and trauma informed.

4. Monitors client's progress towards identified service plans.

5. Ensures ISPs are child-centered, family focused and community-based.

6. Plans the delivery of specific services to meet assessed needs and links clients to planned services.

7. Promotes acquisition of skills in a variety of developmental areas, including cognitive processes and social interaction.

8. Maintains effective working relationships with the courts, schools, social services and other appropriate agencies.

9. Coordinates services and plans with the above collateral agencies and providers, providing follow-up services and monitoring activities to assure that community resources have been successfully accessed.

10. Evaluates the progress of services, holding quarterly reviews, modifying service plans.

11. Assists family members in problem solving and coping strategies.

12. Conducts and attends training courses relevant to services and services delivery systems.

13. Monitors case records to ensure quality and compliance; tracks the progress of clients.

14. Receives referrals and screens for appropriateness; participates in scheduled staffings.

15. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor consistent with Board policies and procedures.

16. Participates in chart audit process with Quality Assurance to ensure compliance with Medicaid regulations and best practice.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
The entry level qualifications for this position are as follows:

A. Requisite knowledge, skills and abilities:

1. Knowledge of human development and normal/abnormal psychology as relates to children and adolescents.

2. Knowledge consistent with developmentally sensitive and trauma informed practices.

3.. Knowledge of treatment modalities for the chronically mentally ill (diagnostic and assessment techniques).

4.. Knowledge of DSM-IV.

5. Knowledge of child and behavioral therapy.

6. Knowledge of and skills in appropriate client documentation for licensure.

7. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work.

8. Ability to work with multicultural populations/all levels of persons.

9. Ability to communicate effectively (orally, written and interpersonally).

10. Ability to network with and work well with others.

11. Skills in assessing/identifying situation and finding appropriate resolution (problem-solving skills).

11. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

B. Special licenses, registration or certification:

LCSW or LPC preferred. Licensed Eligible required. Valid driver's license.

C. Education or training (cite major area of study):

Master's degree in clinical social work, counseling or other human services field.

D. Understanding of the public school system and provision of services within the school environment.

E. Level and type of previous work experience:
  1. Two years experience (preferred) working with children/youths and families with significant emotional and behavioral issues.
