Job description

SCHOOL AGE SERVICES - TUTOR (LEAPS)


PURPOSE OF POSITION:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The part-time Tutor (LEAPS) is responsible for assisting the Site Director and Group Leaders with instructing and aiding students academically to achieve maximum academic success. The ideal candidate will lead small groups of students through assignments with homework and studies in core subjects. The Tutor (LEAPS) must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Generate tutoring plans for specified students that outline individual goals.
  • Assist students with academic exercises, homework, school projects etc.; concentrating efforts with small groups of students and individuals.
  • Compile, prepare, and organize materials and sessions for instruction and other learning activities.
  • Reinforce all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher.
  • Provide instructional support and reinforcement to students identified in need of tutoring.
  • Utilize effective instructional practices, behavior management strategies, assessment techniques and directed teaching methods.
  • Document tutoring session.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with supervisor, program staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to develop positive rapport and maintain an effective working relationship with students.
  • Provide careful, attentive supervision; alert at all times. Ensure the safety of all students.
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior and understand positive youth development approaches to the academic and social development of youth.
  • Promote a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others.
  • Employee will accurately report work time via approved YMCA Clocking method: Branch Kiosk, YMCA Site Phone, YMCA iPad or time sheet.
  • Uphold and exemplify the YMCA’s Core Values and principles of Character Development.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree (preferred).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful classroom/tutoring experience with elementary grades. Teacher certificate preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional time management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in math, English, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.


WORK SCHEDULE:

Flexible work schedule required. Work schedules may vary per the needs of specific before and after sites.


Before care is from 6:30 am until the start of school Monday - Friday.

After care is from the end of school until 6:30 pm Monday - Friday.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent climbing, sitting, standing, pushing, walking, kneeling, and stooping.
  • Ability to respond quickly and swiftly to emergency situations.
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds using proper technique
