Job description

Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River in West Haverstraw, NY, the Bowline Point Generation Station comprises two dual-fuel natural gas and oil-fired boilers, along with two GE steam turbine units, providing a combined capacity of 1169 megawatts. The plant has been a significant source of electricity for the region and has undergone upgrades to meet environmental regulations, ensuring its continued role in maintaining grid stability.

Opportunity Summary

As a Safety Specialist, you'll lead the development and implementation of comprehensive safety programs, ensuring compliance with company policies and OSHA regulations. You'll coordinate safety training, conduct regular meetings, and drive a culture of safety consciousness. Additionally, you'll respond to incidents, investigate root causes, maintain records, oversee compliance documentation, conduct inspections, and promote continuous improvement through collaborative efforts and active participation in safety committees.

Primary Responsibilities

Safety Program Management

  • Develop, implement, and administer comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with OSHA and other regulations.
  • Coordinate safety training for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings and orientations.

Incident Response and Investigation

  • Respond to incidents, injuries, and near misses.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate incident records and follow up on corrective measures.

Regulatory Compliance and Liaison

  • Maintain awareness of and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies.
  • Manage safety-related documentation and reporting requirements.

Safety Inspections and Audits

  • Conduct routine site inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Perform housekeeping inspections and address potential hazards.
  • Audit facilities, equipment, and processes for safety compliance.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various scenarios.
  • Provide guidance and support during emergencies, including accidents, safety incidents, fires, and spills.

Safety Culture Promotion

  • Collaborate with department managers to integrate safety considerations into operations and projects.
  • Drive a culture of safety excellence through communication, training, and recognition programs.
  • Participate in safety committees and forums to promote awareness and continuous improvement.

Documentation and Training

  • Maintain safety data sheets and oversee regulatory-mandated training records.
  • Manage safety-related documentation, including policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Provide safety and compliance guidance during plant equipment outages.

Risk Assessment and Analysis

  • Conduct job hazard analyses and risk assessments for new processes, equipment, and facilities.
  • Monitor and implement new safety regulations and industry best practices.

Working Relationships

The Safety Specialist reports to the Plant Manager and maintains a close working relationship with NAES Corporate Safety contacts, other NAES corporate support services, as well as Client corporate contacts.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hat, safety glasses, respiratory protection, hearing protection, chemical suits, hand protection, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

Regular work schedule is Monday to Friday, during regular day shift hours. Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, to meet deadlines and ensure resolution of plant problems, as well as respond to emergencies after business hours as needed.

Compensation

The initial starting compensation will range from $105,000 to $130,000.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Extensive experience in safety management, ideally within power generation, industrial, or manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing comprehensive safety programs, including managing incidents and investigations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of OSHA regulations, industry-specific safety standards, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to conduct effective safety training, lead safety meetings, and communicate safety objectives across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for investigating incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in safety management software and tools for incident reporting, data analysis, and documentation management.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and department managers to integrate safety considerations into operations and projects.
  • Experience in fostering a collaborative safety culture and working with safety committees.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fires, spills, and other emergencies.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
