Salary Range:
System Safety Specialist I: $65,954 - $78,079
System Safety Specialist II: $76,577 - $85,288
System Safety Specialist III: $86,565 - $98,686
System Safety Specialist IV: $96,433 - $112,083
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Director, DOS Operations Support & Safety, the incumbent will be responsible for NYC Transit Department of Subways industrial hygiene programs including but not limited to: assisting the Office of System Safety (OSS) with the evaluation of field operations and workplace hazards, including indoor air quality investigations; assists in the performance of field surveys to determine compliance with NYC Transit policies; aid in recommending task-specific engineering controls and personal protective equipment; facilitate the process for toxicological reviews of chemical products by OSS; aid with on job task and exposure assessments and development of appropriate recommendations. This position will also require aiding with the monitoring and oversight of the Hearing Conservation, Asbestos Management, and Lead Management programs for Subways divisions, including the issuance of reports prepared by OSS.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, fire safety, environmental or occupational safety, ergonomics, statistics, mathematics, chemical, physical or biological sciences, industrial hygiene, safety management, or a related field; plus at least two years of satisfactory full-time experience in professional System Safety-related work; or
  • An associate degree from an accredited college or university in a field listed in “1” above; plus four years of satisfactory, full-time experience in professional System Safety-related work; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus six years of satisfactory, full-time professional System Safety-related work; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in “1”,"2" or “3” above. A master's degree in any of the fields indicated above may be substituted for one year of experience.

Special Notes
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level I or one additional year performing duties described in "1" above.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level II or two additional years performing duties described in "1" above.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level III or three additional years performing duties described in "1" above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory position.

DESIRED SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of federal and state health & safety regulations, OSHA and NIOSH sampling methodologies, and other industrial hygiene practices and principles including ventilation.
  • Must have familiarity with Windows, MS Excel, and Access.
  • Candidates with ABIH, BCSP or equivalent professional certification will be given preference.

Selection Method:
Based on evaluation of education, skills, experience, and interview.
All appointments, with the exception of the Department of Subways employees on MaBSTOA payroll, will be made on the NYCT payroll.
