System Safety Specialist I: $65,954 - $78,079
System Safety Specialist II: $76,577 - $85,288
System Safety Specialist III: $86,565 - $98,686
System Safety Specialist IV: $96,433 - $112,083
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for conducting surveys to identify the presence of asbestos and lead containing materials based on submitted construction project scopes of work and engineering drawings; assist C&D in developing asbestos abatement and lead disturbance work procedures and variance applications, review various project submittals (specifications, variances, notifications, permits) to determine conformance with NYCT asbestos and lead policy instructions, perform projects inspections, review submitted final reports. Perform site inspections of Contractor and In-House asbestos abatement and lead disturbance work and procedure review. Work may also include the managing of contracts for asbestos abatement and lead disturbance removal and air monitoring, responding to NYCT asbestos/lead emergencies, and maintenance of asbestos/lead databases. Candidates must be available for evening, weekend and shift work.
Education and Experience:
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, fire safety, environmental or occupational safety, ergonomics, statistics, mathematics, chemical, physical or biological sciences, industrial hygiene, safety management, or a related field; plus at least two years of satisfactory full-time experience in professional System Safety-related work; or
  • An associate degree from an accredited college or university in a field listed in “1” above; plus, four years of satisfactory, full-time experience in professional System Safety-related work; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus six years of satisfactory, full-time professional System Safety-related work; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in “1”,"2" or “3” above. A master's degree in any of the fields indicated above may be substituted for one year of experience.

Special Notes
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level I or one additional year performing duties described in "1" above.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level II or two additional years performing duties described in "1" above.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level III or three additional years performing duties described in "1" above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory position.

Desired Skills:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience performing asbestos surveys.
  • Experience with lead disturbance project desired.
  • NYSDOL certification for asbestos and SSPC Lead C-3 Certification.
