Form of workWe are seeking applicants for Robotics Hardware Engineer interns with a focus on electronics and sensor integration for the summer of 2024 to work with our teams at the National Robotics Engineering Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Lawrenceville in Pittsburgh. Successful applicants must be currently studying at the Undergraduate or Graduate level in Electrical Engineering or similar related fields.
The electronic devices and sensors you support will be used in applications ranging from autonomous mobile robots to industrial machine and operator productivity or safety tools and beyond.
Your primary responsibilities include:
- Electronic systems design, implementation, and documentation for robotic sensors and subsystems.
- Communicating regularly and consulting with project managers and other researchers or engineers
- Contributing to the technical design and development of components and equipment used in research and development
- Hands-on contributions to program success
- Presenting project work and lessons learned to the organization
Required Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in a degree-seeking program at the Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate level
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Digital circuit design experience
- Evidence of circuit design and PCB layout required
- Experience working and collaborating within a team
- Self-motivated, curious, and failure-seeking to achieve continuous improvements
- Practices attention to detail, and respect for documentation accuracy and information sharing
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of how to use Altium Designer is a plus
- Familiarity working with sensors through protocols such as CAN, TCP/UDP, SPI, I2C, UART, etc.
- Experience programming microcontrollers and exposure to FPGAs
- Experience with brushed and brushless motor controller design
- Experience with motion controllers and mechatronics
- Experience with custom smart battery design and development
- Experience with electromechanical systems integration
- Experience with Imaging and Illumination optics
- Experience selecting electrical components at both the PCB and system level.
- Experience prototyping circuits, PCB assembly and rework
- Cursory understanding of the impacts of mechanical requirements on an electrical system (thermal, mounting, maintenance, etc.)
- An eagerness to work in a dynamic, rapid design, prototype, and build environment
- A clear real passion for robotics and related fields
Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 37.5 hours per week) during a 12-14 week period starting May 2024.
