Are you in a master’s program and looking for a hands-on engineering opportunity that includes assessing flexible on-site production systems, developing agent-based or mixed integer optimization algorithms, and simulation and quantitative metrics comparing system architecture and schedule approaches?  Will you work collaboratively with others while seeing a project through to completion? The ARM Institute is looking for a full-time Robot Project Engineering Intern eager to enhance their real-world experience at our Pittsburgh office in Mill 19. We are looking for master’s and PhD level students with working knowledge they can apply on day one, a demonstrated work ethic, and project leadership.
In this role you’ll build discrete event simulation models and scheduling algorithms to complete the following:

• Develop and implement in virtual simulation concepts for flexible production lines with multi-product capability and inherent supply chain resiliency. 
• The systems should produce at least two distinct product categories, each with a range of sizes, and be resilient to input material disruptions. 
• The concepts will be assessed in the context of disposable and reusable supplies stored in hospital in-patient supply rooms.
• Baseline set of robotics and auxiliary automation processes in the following categories: input materials, operations for stiffening, cutting, batching, transfer, placement into fixtures, assembly, fastening, quality assurance, washing, packing, palletizing. 
• Baseline production requirements for each product:  weekly requirements, stock levels, replenishment triggers for each product and size.
• Baseline technologies including commercially available and emerging tech from ARM and other external projects, including production rates and changeover times.  Priority given to technologies that provide multi-product flexibility (example: laser or ultrasonic cutting of flat stock material).

Skills/Education Needed:

• Currently enrolled in a Master’s program at an accredited institute of higher education in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or a related field.  
• Knowledge of discrete-event simulation, experience with Anylogic or equivalent commercially available tools.
• Project experience in application of AI or Mathematical Optimization methods (such as agent-based and/or mixed integer programming) for scheduling production job shops or similar applications.
• Superior project management, programmatic and time managment skills.
• Possess an aptitude for technology and proficiency using IT systems and tools (e.g., Microsoft Office suite of products, with advanced skills in Python or Java, statistics and data analytics.

This is a temporary full-time paid internship position up to 16 weeks, working on-site in Pittsburgh, PA. Start as early as May 1. Must be authorized to work in the US.
