Position Summary
The Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University invites applications for a full-time Research Technician. The successful candidate will oversee day-to-day operations of an NSF funded project on the genomics of social behavior in an insect.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Collect and maintain a large colony of burying beetles •
- Train and manage a team of undergraduate students. •
- Collect data on behavioral and morphological traits of beetles •
- Perform DNA extractions and next-gen sequencing library preparations •
- Report progress to the PI and contribute to data analyses and manuscripts •
- Perform other related duties as needed by the PI
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision •
- Ability and willingness to handle insects and manage a large colony of insects •
- Ability to record and organize large and complex datasets •
- Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel •
- Ability to use a micropipette and willingness to learn new techniques in molecular biology
Physical Requirements
- Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move or lift objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field
- Experience working in a lab with experience in insect husbandry and/or molecular biology preferred
