Job description

The Husbandry Technician II is responsible for providing back up support in all the areas at short notice. Maintains proper husbandry, environmental and study related records for all species according to standard operating protocols and institutional policies. Ability to apply knowledge of disinfection, sterilization, sanitation and environmental microbiological analysis while working with different species and biosecurity zones.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute assigned animal husbandry tasks (e.g., animal transfer; maintenance of animal housing areas; routine sanitation; food and water supply & drug dosing management as per research models; scheduled cage changing).
  • Evaluate and record environmental parameters and report any deviations to supervisor.
  • Assist in advanced techniques on animals (e.g., treatments, euthanasia, weaning) as per defined guidelines.
  • Perform non-routine animal husbandry procedures with guidance (e.g., colony care for immune-compromised animals; tumor assessments (study data collection) on rodent species).
  • Assists with the collection of biological samples for submission to the diagnostic lab.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate documentation for assigned areas (e.g., cage cards, room maintenance records, basic animal health problems).
  • Assist with the training and orientation of new staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.

Minimum Experience:

  • 2+ years experience in animal care, veterinary facility or animal husbandry-related field required.
  • Experience in disinfection, sterilization, sanitation, and environmental microbiological analysis preferred.
  • Experience monitoring and recognizing changes in animal health conditions, and identifying deviations from norm preferred.
  • Experience in animal handling and restraint preferred.
  • Experience operating animal caging and sanitation equipment preferred.
  • Experience in record maintenance as per defined procedures preferred.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/ comparable role.

  • None

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within 18 months

Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Leverages strong knowledge of animal husbandry processes to independently address support needs (e.g., scheduled cage changing, maintenance of research model requirements, animal transfer, restraint, and handling) with skill and speed.
  • Is able to advise peers around specific support processes and standard operating procedures.
