Research Chemist

As an S&T Research Chemist, Expert, you will conduct research and development of new coating technologies as part of the Functional Coatings Formulation Team at PPG's Coatings Innovation Center. You will lead pieces of a larger project as well as drive strategic project deliverables to formulate new products with unique properties for PPG, such as nonstick coatings for cookware/bakeware, high durability coatings for outdoor applications, or flexible, corrosion-resistant coatings for packaging. This will include developing fundamental understanding as well as formulation and testing capabilities where relevant. In addition, you will be responsible for mentoring other technical team members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plan, direct and execute the development of new functional coating technologies
• Work with a cross-functional team to execute project deliverables
• Participate and lead IP landscapes and drafting of patent applications when appropriate
• Build and maintain working relationships with relevant global colleagues across PPG
• Identify and screen new ideas to fill the innovation pipeline
• Proactively take ownership of projects and deliver results.
• Develop deep fundamental understanding of structure-property relationships and formulation factors of coatings
• Communicate progress on projects to technical and business leadership
• Ensure a safe and clean lab environment
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry with 0-5 years of industry experience
• Masters or B.S. in Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry with at least 5 years of industry experience
• Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams
• Proven track record of delivering high-quality results that meet rigorous statistical analysis
• An understanding of polymer structure-property relationships and formulation experience is preferred.
