Job Description
Working within the Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences as part of the Fuels and Combustion Science (FCS) Team this Senior Researcher will work with a multi-disciplinary team to overcome technical barriers to the broad adoption of sustainable liquid transportation fuels. This is an exciting opportunity focused on researching and developing net-zero-carbon fuels for difficult-to-decarbonize sectors such as heavy-duty trucking, off-road vehicles, rail, marine, and aviation.
Expected Job Duties
  • Assist with leading an interdisciplinary Fuel Chemistry and engineering team to develop future projects, experimental plans, and protocols for rapid decarbonization of difficult-to-electrify energy sectors with a focus on aviation fuel.
  • The successful candidate will be a key contributor to developing funding opportunities and partnerships both within NREL and with key industry stakeholders.
  • Lead the development of complex analytical techniques for fundamental Fuel Chemistry studies (

    ) and will assist junior staff with executing research objectives.
  • Effectively communicate and interact with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers across directorates, as well as outside of NREL. Obtain necessary input data for simulations and provide meaningful interpretation of analytical results to guide experiments, operations, and engineering designs.
  • Disseminate knowledge through publications in technical journals and presentations at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations.
  • Work with management, senior staff, and industry stakeholders to plan and design future potential projects, determine technical objectives, and interact with and provide regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience . Applies advanced scientific technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert. Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas, including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Significant level of knowledge within chemistry, particularly in analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Ability to develop and validate complex analytical characterization tools for sustainable fuel alternatives, including detailed speciation of alternative fuel candidates, and assessment of their fit-for-purpose properties.
  • Significant experience in sustainable fuel characterization (especially aviation), standards, and end-use.
  • Recognized national or international reputation in the areas of sustainable alternative fuels.
  • Experience with leading research & development projects and contributing towards the publication of high-impact papers/reports/patents.
  • Possesses efficient and effective communication skills- consistently communicating research results with clients, external agencies, governmental senior-level management and general audience.
  • This position requires an onsite work arrangement of 4-5 days a week. A remote work arrangement is not possible with this role.
  • Existing experience working with gas chromatography.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the development and characterization of sustainable aviation fuels, especially with advanced analytical techniques, such as two-dimensional gas chromatography, and thermal and oxidation stability.
  • Experience with the development of ASTM fuel specifications and knowledge of relevant industry standards
  • Experience leading teams of multi-disciplinary scientists.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher V / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
