Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, incumbent provides design, development, assembly, maintenance and repair support to the UCLA Basic Plasma Science Facility (BAPSF). The Research and Development Engineer is responsible for the design, development, assembly, installation, calibration, and testing of instrumentation, probes, and other hardware associated with diagnosing or controlling plasma devices in the lab. Additional duties include constructing laboratory instruments and instrumentation, machining tasks using a lathe, mill, etc., analog and digital electronic techniques, assembly and design of simple circuits from block diagrams, circuit board layout, translating and packaging such designs into working instruments, and operation and safety procedures for normal electronics test equipment, such as oscilloscopes or network analyzers, and techniques involved in measuring hazardous voltages and currents. The incumbent will work with FPGA logic design and use VHDL to program them as well as Verilog and C/C++.

1. Bachelors' degree in Physics or Engineering with at least three years relevant working experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. M.S. or equivalent advanced degree in Physics or Engineering.

3. Working knowledge of Plasma Physics, experimental protocol, and laboratory and shop safety procedures.

4. Skill and experience working with basic mechanical shop machines such as a lathe, milling machine, bandsaws, drill presses, and solder equipment.
