OVERVIEW
As the Product Development Engineer - Eyewear on our team, you will be responsible for mechanical design, development, and quality of our products. You will play a role in defining processes and methods to improve new product introductions and productivity. You will identify and initiate techniques, prototype and test solutions for product features, and design and validated production designs that ensure a functional and beautiful product and deliver an exceptional user experience. To be successful you need to be initiative-taking, understand how to solve problems and dive deep while delivering to the highest standards. You will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of the technical and mechanical makeup of eyewear and optical. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to integrate feedback and to respond quickly to changing contexts and work environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for developing new product from design through the development phases.
  • Leverage eyewear and optical knowledge to work with internal and external partners to plan, design, develop, qualify, validate, and stabilize component and development for new product introductions.
  • Provide technical feasibility requests from the design and product teams during new product conceptualization.
  • Support design using eyewear and optical assembly knowledge to provide process development, build coordination, technical support and troubleshooting assistance to internal and external partners.
  • Partner with production team and suppliers to develop designs, components, new colors across material types and other product treatments.
  • Function as the liaison between the Design, Product Management, Quality, and suppliers and provide "voice of manufacturing" to ensure product designs incorporate DFM/A principals.
  • Own any issues and attack them with a formal RCCM (Root Cause Counter Measure) approach.
  • Develop process metrics to ensure product project remains on schedule: development step lead time and overall punctuality to release timing.
  • Create the project documentation to include, but not limited to, kickoff forms, drawings, test report, work instructions APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) validation packet.
  • Responsible for identifying and leading the procurement of samples from internal and external suppliers to confirm aesthetic and functional requirements.
  • Your finish line is a new fully vetted finished product ready for manufacturing.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed.

Fiscal Accountabilities: NA
Location: San Francisco, in office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Compensation: $120,000- $125,000 base salary
Key Working Relationships:
This person is required to have strong working relationship with design, merchandising, supply and production, quality, outside suppliers, and all members of the Leadership Team.
Required Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering or related Engineering Degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 4 years of experience in engineering, Product Development or project management in the field of eyewear and optical frames.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing processes (injection molding, Acetate, Metal, assembly, automation) and general surface treatment techniques (painting, plating, pad-printing, etc.)
  • You will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, the desire to learn from new challenges and the problem solving and communication skills to work within a highly interactive team.
  • Experience with projects using Lean principles (VSM, SIPOC, Kaizen, Visual Management, RCCM, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general performance testing (environmental, mechanical, optical, etc.)
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interface with related departments.
  • Ability to work on broad range of assignments.
  • Knowledge of systems processes that ensure decisions are data driven.
  • To be successful you need to be highly motivated, understand how to solve problems and dive deep while delivering to the highest standards.
  • Candidates must show a hands-on passion for their work and be able to communicate their ideas and concepts both verbally and visually.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to integrate feedback and to respond quickly to changing contexts and work environments.

Travel Requirements:
  • Travel domestic & international expected 4-6 times per year (20%)

Physical Requirements:
  • This position is based in an office environment. Primarily sedentary work with occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Must be able to perform essential functions (with or without accommodation) without posing a "direct threat" to the health and safety to self or others.
