SUMMARY:
The Network Engineer (WAN/LAN) position is responsible for planning, configuring and installing network electronic equipment. The position designs routing, monitors traffic, diagnose and resolves WAN/LAN network issues and equipment problems pertaining to Layers four and below of the OSI model
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, configures and installs LAN/WAN electronic equipment.
  • Designs routing configurations, monitors traffic, diagnoses and resolves WAN/LAN network issues and equipment problems pertaining to Layers four and below of the OSI model
  • Plans, configures and implements required routing patterns for WAN networks.
  • Diagnoses and resolves equipment problems on a timely basis; arranges for additional technical support as needed.
  • Participate in the evaluation, operation and testing of software, hardware and network security configurations.
  • Manage district wired and wireless network for WISD and affiliates (WIHI, WEOC, WAVE, Honey Creek) including maintaining IP subnets and static IPs.
  • Assists in implementing network security procedures with the Cyber Security Analyst
  • Assists in implementing system updates, enhancements and expansions.
  • Manages the WISD telephony system, including E911, analog lines, cloud-based faxing, desk phone configuration
  • Manage, configure, and update WISD site-to-site VPN connections
  • Manages local district routers which connect to the WISD to support the countywide Fiber Consortium
  • Work closely with MISEN engineers to support statewide connections and BGP/Peering associated with the Washtenaw ISD network hub
  • Provides technical assistances and training to end users on network operations and procedures.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and support physical fiber.
  • Works in a team environment.
  • Ability to utilize Packet analyzer in troubleshooting
  • Responsible for Backups, business continuity and network incident response planning
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and productive work relationship with intermediate and local district staff.
  • This position requires the ability to be available on-call to handle work problems at all hours.

  • Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Regular predictable attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of an earned Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Information Assurance, Cyber/IT Security or related field. Bachelor's degree preferred, OR Equivalent combination of significant education, training, certifications and experience
  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience in analyzing, diagnosing and resolving WAN/LAN, wireless, and telephony issues
  • Experience with Network administration and engineering required.
  • Experience troubleshooting OSI Layers 2-4 and knowing when to escalate support
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, independence and initiative.
  • Experience with wireless controllers required
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Certification related to Cisco network engineering preferred
  • CCNA or CCNP level highly preferred and highly desirable

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, operating instructions, procedure manuals and professional journals.
  • Ability to write routing reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of educators, customers and the general public.
  • Ability to facilitate effective group process.
  • Ability to express self clearly, both orally and in writing.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
  • Networking, routing and switching
  • Testing and monitoring proficiencies for routers and all other WAN equipment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the evolving field of technology and its uses for instructional practices and management, including distance and virtual learning.
  • Strong knowledge of subnetting, Class A/B/C networks, private/public IPv4 addressing
  • IPv6 knowledge preferred
  • Must be familiar with current and emerging technology issues impacting ISDs and local districts related to instruction and related technological areas.
  • Must have strong technology skills.
  • Contribute to Library of documentation: creation of new documents and updating existing documentation as needed.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the everyday workflow is necessary.
  • Ability to implement new technologies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to perform binary and hexadecimal mathematics as pertains to IP (VLSM, CIDR and Subnet Notation).

REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

The noise level in the work environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day. TERMS:
Salary and other employment conditions are set forth by the Board of Education as reflected in the Non-Affiliated Staff manual. Starting salary ranging (dependent upon experience) $72,232 - $88,773.
