You will thrive as our new Recreation Manager if you are an experienced leader who is strategic, values teamwork, an effective/efficient communicator and manages people with accountability. You will focus on comprehensive recreational planning and alignment, such as taking account of inclusive recreational offerings for all ages and ability levels, fostering internal and external relationships, and managing contracts.
This position will work collaboratively to plan, direct, coordinate, and manage the work in the Recreation Division and oversee programs, services, and facilities with a focus on healthy lifestyles and community connection.
We are looking for a candidate who can easily navigate our comprehensive, Parks & Recreation program areas to ensure our Cost-of-Service policy is being adhered to while operationalizing the new Redmond Senior & Community Center and governing council workflows, meetings, budgeting, and workforce planning.
In this role, you will have three (3) direct reports (Recreational Supervisors) who in turn manage ten (10) FTEs, as well as several more supplemental/seasonal employees and hundreds of volunteers.
This position can expect an exciting first year that will include:

  • Operationalizing and opening the brand-new $58 million, 52,000 square foot Redmond Senior & Community Center on our main municipal campus, anticipated to open in May 2024
  • Managing staff through the implementation, build out, and public launch of our new recreation software (SmartRec by Amilia Technologies, Inc.)
  • Leading a comprehensive recreational model/plan that aligns resources and guides staff workplans while adhering to the recommendations and key findings of the newly adopted Parks, Arts, Recreation, Culture, and Conservation (PARCC Plan)
This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position working Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend work may be required due to meetings, programs, and facility needs.If you are selected as our next Recreation Manager, here are a few of your other key responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain sustainable systems, processes, and comprehensive plans that scale and align recreation services to meet the changing needs of a more urban and diverse community
  • Activate underutilized amenities while planning, coordinating, organizing, assigning, and supervising a comprehensive approach to management of Citywide recreational programs, services, events, and activities based on best practices.
  • Proactively manage updates relevant to policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Anticipate trends and community needs and create strategic plans and/or partnerships in response, looking at both short-term and long-term direction of the Recreation Division.
  • Implement and maintain division workplans for areas of work under their purview.
  • Supervise the activities of staff and supervisors responsible for carrying out programs, services, and functions of the Recreation Division. This includes effectively using leadership and interpersonal skills to supervise, lead, train, and motivate staff.
  • Prioritize and oversee the work of assigned team to ensure both participant and community partners needs and deadlines are met.
  • Create and manage financial objectives, revenue targets, monitors budget, and train staff on financial policies and procedures to ensure adherence to the Recreation Cost-of-Service Methodology.
  • Maintain and foster community partnerships with organizations such as the Lake Washington School District, Wave Aquatics, Redmond Historical Society, King County Library Systems, etc.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in recreation management, park operations, facilities management, or closely related field
  • Two years supervisory/managerial experience, with demonstrated progressively responsible leadership experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent, bachelor's degree in recreation management, public administration, facilities management, leisure studies or related field preferred
  • Public Sector experience preferred
  • Or equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
License and Certificates
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record that meets City standards
