Position Summary/Overview:VCU Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) team seeksculturally and professionally diverse individuals skilled in Radiation SafetyPrograms. Safety & Risk Management (SRM)partners with the VCU community to promote and facilitate a positive,campus-wide attitude of safety excellence and environmental stewardship toprotect university assets and reduce risks.
The primary mission of Safety & Risk Management is to advance and support a safe and healthy environment atVCU and VCU Health. This work is accomplished through surveys, consultation,teaching, advising, auditing, and environmental monitoring. As the Universityliaison for safety and compliance, SRM works with outside agencies andorganizations to address all applicable standards.
The Radiation Safety Technician is an integral part ofthe SRM team. The Radiation Safety Technician performs duties required by VCU'sRadiation Safety programs to meet all Federal, State and University regulationsand policies including but not limited to the following: performing Radiation Safety surveys, inspections, investigations, waste programmanagement, and lab analysis, and providing emergency response, as necessary.The Radiation Safety Technician provides support services to VCU and VCU HealthSystem personnel including chemical and lab safety.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in Radiation Safety surveys, waste disposal, or other areas ofhealth physics.
  • Demonstrate ability to follow supervision and to perform assigned tasks on anindependent basis during routine and emergency operations.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Science and STEM background and an interest in learning and performing healthand safety and health physics techniques and skills.
  • Ability to lift or move 20-50 pounds.
  • A desire to foster equity and inclusion in one's team and throughout theuniversity.
  • A commitment to VCU's core competencies of accountability/integrity;achievement; collaboration; diversity; innovation; and service excellence.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a diverse and inclusive environment and anexpressed commitment to do so while at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited community college oruniversity with major course work in physical or biological sciences, withadditional coursework in health physics or a related radiological field.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute for thiseducation and experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of health physics and applicable Stateand Federal radiation control standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation used in radiation detection and measurement andapplications for processing data from instruments.
