The Augusta County Emergency Communication Center (ECC) is actively recruiting Public Safety Communications Officer I positions. Successful candidates will perform telecommunications work under frequent stressful conditions while receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for service from the public. In addition, the candidate will work jointly with fire, rescue and law enforcement through use of communication equipment. Candidates will complete a 6-week in house academy and continue their training on an assigned shift under the supervision of a Shift Supervisor and the agency’s Training Coordinator.
Essential functions and responsibilities of a Public Safety Telecommunicator include but are not limited to:
- Receives emergency requests for service by radio and telephone and determines the appropriate response based on location, the nature of the request and departmental policies;
- Operates and monitors multiple emergency radio frequencies;
- Performs emergency medical dispatch while providing pre-arrival instructions to callers
- Maintains communication with on scene and responding units for accuracy
- Operates and monitors national and statewide teletype records system
- Completes required monthly training to ensure proper handling of incidents
- Operates other related equipment such as a voice recording system, TDD for hearing impaired callers and various other office type equipment
- Performs related tasks as assigned
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability and willingness to obtain necessary training to perform duties of the position
- Ability to work in emergency situations and a stressful environment
- Ability to work shift work, weekends and holidays
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
- Previous knowledge of Public Safety operations is useful but not required
