Full-Time and Permanent; 7.5 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year; Grade J DEFINITION The Assistant Director of Public Safetyand Security Services is responsible for supporting the Director in all district-wide functions and programs related to enhancing proactive approaches to security, safety, discipline, and law enforcement support. The position also includes overseeing the training of School Security Officers and implementing functions related to complex district Safety and Security initiatives, programs, and plans. SUPERVISION Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director ofPublic Safety and Security Services.

The incumbent is also responsible for supervising clerical personnel and other classified staff. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The position requires managing and working collaboratively with various departments and school sites across the school division. The incumbent is responsible for managing programs and services related to security and the student population.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (may not include all duties performed) Ability to lead, supervise, train, and work with security staff. Supervises and evaluates School Security Officers. Oversees a comprehensive school safety/security program.

Coordinates efforts of school personnel, community leaders, and parents in meeting program goals and develops and implements new strategies to improve the effectiveness of programs. Is responsible for ensuring the completion and documentation of annual Safety and Security assessments of school and support facilities. Conducts regular site visits to schools to provide the necessary support for building administrators and other school staff related to areas of responsibility.

Assists in the preparation of School Board reports. Manages grant programs as assigned. Develops system-wide training for staff related to school safety.

Assists the Director ofPublic Safety and Security Services with implementing theft prevention and loss-control measures to protect school and staff personnel property and conducting security audits. Maintains the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Security Instructor Certification and serves as a district trainer. Assist the Director ofPublic Safety and Security Services in planning annual and ongoing training for School Security Officers (SSOs).

Assists the Director ofPublic Safety and Security Services in conducting disaster response and other emergency conditions operations plans. Assists and plans with the Director ofPublic Safety and Security Services concerning procedures, equipment needs, budget requirements, and operational activities.Provides central support services for addressing student compliance issues to promote/ensure a safe, secure learning environment for students and staff. Assists the Director ofPublic Safety and Security Services with developing the security budget and all related purchasing and procurement functions as directed.

Coordinates efforts of school personnel, community leaders, and parents in meeting program goals and develops and implements new strategies to improve the effectiveness of programs. Assists customers with an understanding of various system-wide policies, procedures, and regulations related to security, discipline, truancy, investigations, and other student-related matters. Coordinates and monitors student trends in schools and alternative programs and implements policies and procedures related to these trends.

Regularly monitors and analyzes student data and makes recommendations based on data trends. Employs new student-related practices and procedures based on the needs of students. Conducts regular site visits to schools to provide the necessary support for building administrators and other school staff related to areas of responsibility.

Works collaboratively to conduct annual Safety and Security assessments of schools and support facilities. Assists customers with understanding various district-wide policies, procedures, and regulations related to Department of Public Safety and Security matters. Completes other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Thorough knowledge of institutional security operations and methodology. Thorough knowledge of the NPS security and attendance procedures, policies, and goals. Thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system, investigative techniques, and due-process rights of victims and perpetrators of torts and crimes.

Extensive knowledge of the Virginia Criminal Code and Virginia School Law applicable to crimes against school persons and property.Ability to exercise independent, sound judgment and initiative in emergencies not explicitly covered by school regulations, policies, or guidelines. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other school staff, and community partners.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in educational administration, criminal justice, or related area preferred. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and current developments associated with the administration of educational programs. Knowledge of laws, procedures, and practices related to security and educational environments.

Knowledge of student affairs program administration, including security, counseling, student law, and community relations. Ability to design and produce promotional materials and conduct formal presentations. Ability to communicate and work with all strata of the population.

Ability to train staff in all aspects of department-assigned functions. Ability to maintain confidential material and make appropriate decisions based on outcomes. Ability to employ current educational training and knowledge in various aspects of department-related functions.

LICENSE None PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Work requires standard physical attributes needed for walking, standing, sitting, operating office equipment, communication equipment, lifting, moving, carrying light equipment, supplies, etc. HAZARDS Work usually involves exposure to everyday risks. On occasion, and when participating in crisis, emergency, or investigations, one may be subject to the same hazards as security offices, e.g., School Security Officers are subjected to the ongoing dangers that are endemic to security work and public health-safety protection work; the work involves the potential for risk and physical injuries from trespassers, students, or others with weapons, or persons committing acts which are violations of law, requiring sufficient training in restraint techniques to avoid personal harm and bodily injury.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS Work is performed in an office and is subject to continuous stress, deadlines, and frequent interruptions.
