Job Purpose
Principal Project Manager (PM) is responsible for primarily large projects (~$25M-$50M+) and delivering on the objectives established for assigned design, engineering, and construction projects for the Downstate NYC / Brooklyn Territory. More specifically, the Lead PM is responsible for developing short and long-terms plans to meet the objectives on/ahead of schedule and on/under budget including the overall business justification, financial approvals, supplier resources and execution to closeout. In order to do this, the Lead PM will lead highly capable, cross-functional teams which will include members that are both internal and external to National Grid, i.e., Facilities, Procurement, Safety, Environmental, Security, Finance, HR, Sustainability and Stakeholders, etc. The planning and execution of activities will be focused on delivering the right solution to the right customer at the right time.
Principal PM position is part of the Property Services Organization which oversees approximately 4 million square feet of building footprint in New York State consisting offices and electric and gas operations.
Key Accountabilities
The Principal Project Manager (PM) is accountable for performing a wide range of duties, including but not limited to the following:
Plan the project:
- Develop current year and multiyear project plans to support business requirements, rate cases and long-term forecasts (10 years etc.)
- Define the scope of the project in collaboration with the appropriate organization stakeholders and regulators.
- Create a detailed work plan which identifies and sequences the activities and resources needed to successfully execute all projects from conception to close-out.
- Develop a schedule and budget for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the activities.
- Review the project schedule and objectives with senior management and all other staff that will be affected by the project activities; revise as required.
- Oversee suppliers and partners to ensure all projects are executed safely, on-time and on-budget.
Resource all projects:
Engage project stakeholders in planning and design process, incorporate into plan, and receive general acceptance working with procurement, contract qualified vendors/consultants to dedicate sufficient resources to complete the project as appropriate.
Implement the project:
- Develop and execute projects primarily through National Grid’s third-party supplier/partner and budget according to the project plan.
- Develop forms and records to document project activities and maintain on SharePoint sites.
- Set up files to ensure that all project information is appropriately documented and secured. Monitor the progress of the project and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the successful completion.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and other National Grid standards and policies. Communicate with key stakeholders and impacted business groups on progress of project. Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards.
Control the project:
- Provide supplier oversight and ensure project updates are accurate and timely for leadership and our regulators.
- Monitor and approve all budgeted project expenditures and track actual costs and variances on a regular basis.
- Manage vendor relationships, contractual obligations, & payments.
- Ensure that the project deliverables are on time, within budget and at the required level of quality.
- Ensure punch list items are completed including issuance of as-built drawings, product information, warranties, and operating manuals are transitioned to NG and stored / filled.
- Complete work order close out tasks.
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline, construction management or facilities management. PE/PMP/ Masters degree desirable
- Desirable Professional Engineering License with up to (7-10 years) professional development in an engineering field or 15 years of relevant experience.
- Expert knowledge of civil/site work and building systems including but not limited to architectural, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, BMS, Fire & Life Safety and related systems. Familiarity with purchasing, construction contracts, environmental, construction safety regulations, and building codes.
- Demonstrated proficiency with MS Project, Primavera and/or other Project Management software and the MS Office Suite of products; Experience with successful delivery of complex projects and possess team leadership skills.
- Strong influencing and negotiating skills.
- Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.

$139,000 - $164,000 a year
