PURPOSE OF JOB: Perform the classroom duties of an absent Pre-K staff member by supporting effective classroom routines and carrying out developmentally appropriate learning activities. The Pre-K Substitute Teacher will guide young children through activities designed to promote the social, physical, and intellectual growth needed for Kindergarten preparedness by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adheres to all state child care licensing regulations, KCPS Pre-K regulations, and policies.
- Monitors the arrival and departure of students according to Pre-K requirements and keeps daily records of students, as applicable.
- Follows district guidelines for reporting incidents, suspected abuse, neglect, or contagious disease, communicating with relevant building and program administrators in a timely manner.
- Maintains minimum adequate teacher-student ratio and supervisory requirements at all times.
- Implements weekly data-driven lesson plans utilizing the approved curriculum, assessments, which include daily classroom routines, procedures and individualization.
- Participates in cleaning and safety requirements of the Pre-K program, including following required transition procedures when moving children from one area of the school to another.
- Promotes and supports children's social, emotional and physical development consistent with the philosophy of Creative Curriculum and Conscious Discipline classroom management techniques.
- Attends all assigned training and professional development opportunities as required.
- Maintains a positive and professional demeanor when working with children, families, colleagues, and building administrators which align with the philosophy of KCPS Early Learning and Conscious Discipline.
- Conferences with students and caregivers regularly utilizing supporting documentation and engaging families in their student's academic progress as needed.
- Utilize relevant district communications, email, software, and technology effectively in the performance of duties.
- Maintain up-to-date Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED-BL certification.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirement
All new candidates interested in substitute teaching in Kansas City Public Schools must meet the following requirements:
- Must have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit from a regionally accredited, academic degree-granting, college or university
- Must have an overall GPA of 5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Working toward Teacher certi?cation in Missouri
- Must hold a Valid Content Substitute Certificate
- Must pass the pre-employment investigation, Criminal/Child Abuse background Check

This job requires that the employee be able to: sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, lift objects of at least 10 pounds. Job requires the employee to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Visual ability requires mono and color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of work year: 8 hours per day; 5 days/week; 185 workdays
