The Physics Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for two positions: a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Physics and a two-year appointment (with the possibility of renewal) as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics. Both positions are full-time and begin July 1, 2024. Please visit this web page (https://www.hollins.edu/about-hollins/jobs/) to learn more about Hollins; its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice; faculty development; the university’s students; and the Roanoke Valley.

Department and Positions

Hollins University currently offers a physics minor. In addition to teaching in the physics core curriculum at the introductory and upper levels, the ideal candidates should be willing and able to implement and promote an updated physics major (pending approval in spring 2024), including curriculum redesign, addition of new upper-level elective courses, and establishment of connections to local and regional partners for internship and research opportunities.

The Physics Department also has a commitment to contributing physics-related courses to the Environmental Science program, as well as to Hollins’ core curriculum. The positions each carry a teaching load of three courses per semester.

For the tenure-track position:

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in biophysics, astrophysics, or space science, but other disciplinary specializations will be considered. Other duties include advising students, conducting independent studies, supervising student research, participating in department and university service, and ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations.

For the visiting position:

The candidate will be expected to teach a two-semester introductory algebra-based physics lecture/laboratory course, an upper-level course that serves the physics minor (e.g., modern physics or quantum mechanics), and a course to support the revised general education program. Other duties include participating in the life of the department and the university.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements: a Ph.D. in physics completed by June 30, 2024; a demonstrated commitment to contribute to the discipline through active scholarship; and a strong record of teaching at the undergraduate level. Applicants must also demonstrate a clear commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring undergraduate research at a liberal arts institution.

Applications are sought from those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations and a desire to advance Hollins University’s dedication to diversity, equity, justice, and inclusive excellence.

About Hollins

Hollins University is dedicated to academic excellence, creativity, belonging, and preparing students for lives of purpose. Hollins provides an outstanding and academically rigorous undergraduate liberal arts education for women and entrepreneurial and innovative graduate programs for all in a gender-inclusive environment. The university promotes opportunities for research, study abroad, and leadership training, and offers real-world experience through global internships supported by an extensive alumnae/i network.

Application Process

Screening of candidates will begin February 1, 2024 and will continue until the positions are filled.

To apply, please submit the following materials and indicate which position the application is for:

  • A cover letter, including examples of inclusive teaching and research practices;
  • A curriculum vitae; and
  • Separate statements of teaching philosophy, student research engagement (tenure-track position only), and commitment to diversity.

Candidates advanced to the second stage of review will be invited to submit the following materials:

  • Three letters of recommendation (at least one of which must focus on teaching experience and abilities); and
  • Unofficial copy of graduate school transcripts.

Applicants should submit materials to physicssearch@hollins.edu. The selected candidates will be asked to submit official transcripts to the Office of the Provost, and once they accept a contingent employment offer, a criminal history background check will be conducted. For questions about the positions, please contact search chair Dr. Brian Gentry (gentrybs@hollins.edu).

An equal opportunity employer, Hollins fosters diversity and inclusiveness at every level of the university. Persons of all genders; persons with disabilities; persons of all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds; and first-generation college graduates are encouraged to apply.
