Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking an Physician Assistant-Infectious Disease.  Under physician supervision, provides Infectious Disease Service consultative and follow up medical care to patients of varying type and acuity both hospitalized and outpatient.

Responsibilities
  • Functions in the role of advanced practitioner to coordinate comprehensive care delivery.
  • Performs assessment of patient health status by obtaining health and medical history, performing physical examinations
  • Identifying medical and health risk and needs, and record changes in health status.
  • Presents collected data to the Infectious Disease team for feedback and development of plan.
  • Performs follow up evaluations of designated inpatients under supervision.
  • Performs and/or assists with designated procedures.
  • Writes orders/prescriptions for standard formulary medications, laboratory, radiographic studies and consultations.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of admissions, diagnostic evaluations, follow-up exams, laboratory tests, referral to home care, social services, and other agencies in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Documents in the medical record and dictates information as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature.
  • Attends related conferences, seminars and other related activities.
  • Provides input into the strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of the PA service.
  • Availability to work on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Meets state requirements governing the qualifications for Physician Assistants.
  • Knowledge of the laws of the State of Michigan in regard to clinical activities and the Code of Ethics of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:   

  • Licensed in the State of Michigan as a Physician Assistant or eligible to be licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Michigan Controlled Substance License required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current NCCPA certification or eligible for certification.
  • BLCS certification preferred.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • Knowledge and proficiency in word processing and file management using Word and other software as required by the (Portal, Cerner, PACS, WMed EPIC)
  • Ability to work approximately 40 hours per week. Possible weekend call.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.
  • Ability to make quality, independent decisions.
  • Independently mobile.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows preventive measures to minimize exposure to blood and air borne pathogens.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in grammar and spelling skills.
  • Ability to operate automated standard office equipment such as multi-line phone system, transcription equipment, copier, fax machine, shredder, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehends, and transmits complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

WMed is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The medical school offers a comprehensive, innovative four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program and two Master of Science degree programs in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering. We train physicians in 10 residencies and five fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. To support our educational mission, we have Joint Accreditation for interprofessional continuing education, which incorporates accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

 

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

 

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.

 

WMed is building upon Kalamazoo's century-long foundation of drug discovery and medical device development with a strategic investment in clinical, laboratory, community, and educational research. The Center for Immunobiology, Center for Clinical Research, Research Histology Lab, Innovation Center, and Human Research Protection Program contribute to the medical school's advancement of knowledge through innovation and discovery.
