Job description

The Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) seeks a PHAProgram Director who will be the senior staff person responsible for interacting with PHA’s Faculty and Executive Directors and for driving PHA’s key strategic programs from development to execution through managing and oversight of: 1) a staff of seven employees; 2) an annual budget of over $1M; 3) PHA's communications, University-wide outreach and external relations; 4) the global Planetary Health Annual Meeting; 5) a distributed network of volunteers around the world helping to build Planetary Health community in universities as well as lead discrete efforts and committees; and 6) the development of resources in conjunction with other PHA leadership and staff. In close partnership with the Faculty and Executive Directors, and in consultation with the Steering Committee, the Program Director will also help to conceptualize and develop new programs, strategies, and initiatives to advance the academic, educational, policy and programmatic agenda of PHA. Finally, the Program Director will be responsible for reporting on grant activities and assisting with development of new proposals for future funding.


This position requires exceptional communication skills as well as the ability to build and maintain effective relationships both internal to JHU and externally. This position requires approximately 10% travel, with some international travel required.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Planning

  • In conjunction with Faculty and Executive directors, advisors, and other senior staff, participate in strategic planning and provide input for operational and financial considerations to advance PHA priorities.

Organizing & Implementing

  • Work closely with PHA staff, Executive and Faculty directors, to assist in PHA outreach to the broader JHU community and external audiences.
  • Work with the Sr. Administrative Manager on the administration of grants; support the development and preparation of funding proposals and develop and review proposals from financial and administrative perspectives.
  • Develop and maintain a sound management structure, operating policies, procedures, and staffing to meet the operational goals.
  • Develop standards of performance for activities, monitor performance and implement corrective actions as necessary.

Managing

  • Manage a high-performing team of 7 employees: including onboarding, performance management, time approval, and other HR functions, with support from an Administrative Coordinator. Engage, develop and motivate the team to work towards a shared purpose in the best interests of the organization.
  • Oversight of PHA’s communications, outreach, and external relations efforts for expanding constituencies within the University and outside, including advising the Planetary Health Annual Meeting; writes a wide variety of material used to promote PHA. This includes contributing to, and coordinating, donor reports, annual reports, executive summaries, strategic plans, and other reports as necessary.
  • Assist the Faculty and Executive Directors with engagement of PHA’s Advisory Board and Steering Committee.
  • Develop new, and promote existing relationships with PHA affiliates, alumni, scholars, organizations, and institutions in the U.S. and internationally. This includes liaising with other schools, departments and centers at JHU, and with other universities, NGOs, policy and government agencies.
  • Represent PHA at public events, conferences, and University meetings as needed.
  • Manage a growing global network of volunteers who amplify the reach and impact of PHA.
  • In coordination with the Sr. Administrative Manager, manage an annual budget of approx. $1 million and oversee the tracking of monthly budget records; review sponsored accounts and coordinate reporting to funders; responsible for financial approvals and other financial processes.

  • Conduct oneself in a manner to achieve results in a way consistent with organization values and to provide constructive examples for others to do likewise.
  • Establish timely and effective communications with all constituents to keep them aware of important information and to receive information and feedback from them.
  • Maintain an active role in the JH community as a representative for Planetary Health and to represent the organization to both internal and external constituent groups.
  • Develop positive employee relations and communications through consistent interaction and feedback.


Human Resources Management

  • In conjunction with the Sr. Administrative Manager, direct PHA’s overall human resources and organizational development goals, ensuring that all personnel management functions are successfully performed, including recruitment and retention, employee relations, grievances, employee on-boarding, career development and the equitable administration of compensation programs.
  • Ensure that all human resources activities are carried out consistent with University personnel policies.
  • Collaborate with Central HR when specialized support is needed in the areas of employee relations, compensation, recruitment or leave/records management.

Financial Management

  • In conjunction with the Sr. Administrative Manager, direct day to day fiscal management for sponsored research, gifts, general funds, endowments and petty cash funds.
  • Assist with preparation of quarterly budget reports and budget projections.
  • Administer budget during the course of the fiscal year. Works with finance team to project salary support on a continuous cycle to alleviate funding gaps by addressing potential shortfalls as far in advance as possible.
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Ten years of related experience in demonstrated leadership and management in academic administration and/or program management.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and/or demonstrated experience in the area of global environmental change and/or public health as it relates to planetary health.
  • Effectively manages multiple complex projects, and often tight timelines.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
