Job description

We are seeking a Director, Frary Gallery. The Irene and Richard Frary Gallery Director reports directly to the Executive Director of the Hopkins Bloomberg Center, overseeing gallery operations, including the gallery's launch in the fall 2024 and the subsequent management of at least two exhibitions per year. The position has a dotted line relationship to the Dean of Sheridan Libraries, Archives, and Museums to facilitate strong coordination with the libraries' exhibition program and management of university cultural properties. In partnership with an advisory group, the Gallery Director sets strategic direction for the gallery's mission, vision, and goals, oversees gallery operations and programming, and secures funding opportunities.


The Director collaborates with faculty, staff of the Libraries, and guest curators to conceive, prepare, and implement innovative exhibitions with the goal of further imprinting Hopkins' presence and artistic expertise in our nation's capital. To the extent practicable, the Director will develop opportunities for student engagement, such as exhibit research, production, or curatorship. In collaboration with the Hopkins Bloomberg Center communications team, the Director oversees the communications strategy for the gallery, promoting events and exhibitions to attract Hopkins affiliates and the Washington, D.C. public. The Director also addresses day-to-day management involving finance, insurance, security, facilities management, and legal and regulatory compliance.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, promotes, directs, and manages the day-to-day operations of the Irene and Richard Frary Gallery, including finances, legal and regulatory compliance, and facilities management.
  • Oversees and participates in all elements of exhibition design, curation, and installation, working closely with contractors and university staff to produce innovative exhibits to raise Hopkins' visibility in the national art sphere.
  • Ensures exhibition pieces are secure, insured, and transported safely utilizing existing Sheridan Libraries resources and policies.
  • Collaborates with the Hopkins Bloomberg Center Executive Director, Programming and Communications Teams to plan events, develop graphic materials, and promote exhibitions to the larger Washington, D.C. public via the Bloomberg Connects app and other platforms.
  • Helps conceptualize inventive programs and exhibits in collaboration with key Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland entities to bring further focus to the Hopkins art sphere.
  • Works with appropriate partners, participates in and supports strong relationships with the advisory board, donors, and potential donors.
  • Seeks, in collaboration with development colleagues, additional resources from external funding sources to support a minimum of $100,000 in external philanthropic funding each year.
  • Supervises student or casual employees as needed.


Other Requirements

  • Director should be able to stand for extended periods of time and lift objects of up to 30 lbs.
  • Director should be willing and able to travel as needed.
  • Schedule requires weekday and weekend work in line with the gallery's operating hours.
  • Schedule requires availability for ad hoc evening and weekend work related to gallery programming, exhibition openings, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • MA in Arts Administration, Fine Arts, Studio Arts, Art History, or Gallery/Museum Management or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in arts administration including budget management and strategic planning.
  • Additional graduate education may substitute for experience and additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in exhibition installation and design, curation of exhibits, and program development.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the areas of gallery management, grant writing, and fundraising.
  • Previous experience working in a university or college environment.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Excellent organizational skills; detail-oriented work habits; excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to inspire trust and work collegially and transparently with faculty members, staff, school and campus officers, university administrators, students, benefactors, and business partners.
  • Strong work ethic and resiliency.
  • Previous fundraising or grant experience.
