The Enterprise Strategy Office (ESO) develops, implements, and drives Enterprise Strategy in support of our company, its customers, and other stakeholders. The scope of this group includes strategy development, strategy execution and value realization, enterprise strategic planning, risk management, and strategic venture investments in healthcare as part of our Global Health Innovation fund. Together, we identify business critical opportunities, frame and evaluate options, and ensure effective implementation and cross-functional engagement to realize impact.

Position Description:

The Executive Director of Commercial Strategy will lead and support strategy development for enterprise critical commercial initiatives, identifying opportunities, assessing, and designing commercial priorities that are complex questions with significant upside for the company, but high ambiguity. This includes ongoing high-priority strategic initiatives across our company as well as the establishment of new strategies and capabilities. This role will work cross-functionally with senior leaders (e.g., Executive Team, ET-1, ET-2) to socialize and refine initiatives, building a coalition of support that is needed to drive the creation of value and adoption of change.

The ideal candidate will possess innovation, high strategic insight, commercial acumen and broad market perspective to provide commercial strategy leadership and expertise for our company. Compelling candidates will have top-tier strategic consulting experience, well-rounded capabilities supporting CEO and ET members, as well as pharmaceutical industry experience. Commercial, Marketing and Market Access and Commercialization strategy experience are particularly valuable for this role. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Head of Commercial Strategy Development.

Located in Rahway NJ is preferred, candidates from Upper Gwynedd, PA will be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of enterprise critical commercial strategies. Identifying opportunities, creating evaluations, and recommendations for high complexity strategies, in collaboration with commercial executive leaders

  • Take leadership in the implementation of critical commercial priorities that require substantial cross-divisional collaboration, strategic thought-partnership, and negotiation to deliver the best solution and impact for the business

  • Use existing or develop novel strategic frameworks to lay out potential options, evaluate implications and conduct 'what you need to believe' or similar analytical analyses to drive to a final recommendation

  • Bring outside-in perspectives, with a depth of current understanding for evolving industry and therapeutic areas trends, interacting with external leaders and partners from consultants, venture capital, and other innovation-focused industries

  • Collaborate with commercial TA leaders and teams on prioritized high-value TA needs and launch excellence providing strategic thought-partnership

  • Manage directly and indirectly internal and external associates dedicated to the enterprise critical commercial strategies

  • Create thriving and psychologically safe engagements, leading without authority to provide new and novel strategic perspectives to the Commercial organization

Education and Industry Experience Requirement:

  • B.S. degree or equivalent required, MBA or PhD preferred

  • 6+ years of management consulting experience from a top-tier firm (e.g., McKinsey, BCG, Bain)

  • A minimum of 10+ years of pharmaceutical experience across diverse roles, including experience consulting and working at the ET level and in industry commercial experience such as US/Global marketing, asset launch, and/or commercialization strategy

Required Experience and Skills:

  • A proven track record leading and delivering strategic initiatives for c-suite and/or commercial executive leadership teams with tangible commercial results

  • High business acumen distilling complex commercial problems, create structured framing, assessments, and actionable recommendations in collaboration with commercial colleagues

  • Deep analytical expertise and external landscape knowledge to inform strategic initiatives from the outside-in

  • Demonstrated authentic leadership qualities with the ability to listen, adapt, excel in ambiguity, and enable other colleagues to thrive

  • Strong ability to influence decision-making in a highly matrixed organization, demonstrating empathy, collaboration, and high EQ

  • Ability to prioritize time and problem solve to focus on most impactful initiatives

  • Strong communicator with excellent verbal and written skills; ability to communicate effectively with senior management and across all levels of the business

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Effective September 5, 2023, employees in office-based positions in the U.S. will be working a Hybrid work consisting of three total days on-site per week, generally Tuesday, Wednesday and either Monday or Thursday, although the specific days may vary by site or organization, with Friday designated as a remote-working day, unless business critical tasks require an on-site presence. Expected salary range:

$200,200.00 - $315,100.00
