The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal,
non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and
firefighters safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico
for the benefit of current and future generations.

Why does the job exist?

The Assistant Superintendent leads and supervises the group of Squad Leaders and acts as the crew Superintendent when the Superintendent is not available. The position is responsible for making on-site evaluations of crew members, wildland fire conditions and based on this will make tactical decisions for appropriate response that considers crew safety as paramount.
The Assistant Superintendent will have full responsibility for the crew whenever the Superintendent is unavailable. The responsibilities are to:
Provide for safe and effective response to wildland fire incidents. Understand wildland fire suppression strategies and tactics pertinent to initial attach, large fire suppression and wildland urban interface/intermix situations.
Supervise subordinates, develop employees and implement disciplinary measures when needed.
Understand, communicate and ensure procurement policies are adhered to and corrective action is in place as warranted. Establish departmental and division policies into standard operating procedures.
Maintain a safe, open and professional work environment based on an understanding of the history of the wildland fire ¿culture¿ and establishing a new diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.
Provide guidance and direction for complex forest management and fire suppression, prescribed burning and restoration programs that require meeting with cooperators, officials, federal, state, tribal and other agencies.
Develop and recommend new methods, techniques, or procedures to reduce overall risks and hazards to effectively implement program objectives and promote the effectiveness of the program and staff training and development.

How does it get done?

The Assistant Superintendent of the Hot Shot Crew has a high-level of responsibility for the crew safety and accomplishments, and therefore on the mission of the Forestry Division to suppress wildfire on 43 million acres of non-federal, non-municipal and non-tribal lands with a primary goal of the position to build the wildland fire crew to achieve and maintain Type I qualifications. The Assistant Superintendent has financial accountability for procurement, travel, tools and equipment, communications equipment such as radios, cell phones and tablets, a variety of vehicle types, and facilities.

Who are the customers?

The job will service the citizens of the state of New Mexico to ensure the management and protection of the State's forests,
watersheds, and natural resources. There are numerous customers serviced to include state, private, local government, federal,
tribal, non profit, non-governmental and intra-state customers.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
  • Bachelor's degree in a field of study related to the position.
  • Experience in wildland fire suppression or prescribed burning operations of at least 5
seasons.
  • Experience including 3 seasons or years of supervisory experience.
  • Fully NWCG qualified Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR), Task Force Leader (TFLD)
and Prescribed Burn Boss 2 (RXB2).

Minimum Qualification

Associate¿s degree in wildland fire science or related natural resource degree and one (1) year supervisory experience and four (4) years of experience in wildland fire or prescribed fire. Must have NWCG qualifications for Crew Boss (CRWB) or other Single Resource and Incident Command Type 4 (ICT4) as specified in PMS 310-1 Incident Commander Type 4 | NWCG and be working toward either Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR) or Task Force Leader (TFLD). Experience and qualifications may substitute for education. Work will be a mixture of office and field settings, exposure to visual/video display terminal, computer and other hand-held and electronic devises for extended periods; but will also include extensive field settings with exposure to extreme weather and
environmental conditions and hazards including smoke, dust, insects, animals, wildland fire, heavy equipment, mechanized equipment, noise, in remote and rugged terrain in variable weather conditions. Ability to conduct long duration strenuous physical labor, hiking, while carrying up to 45lbs for extended periods of time up to 16-hrs per day. Diving motor vehicles and operating utility vehicles, hand tools, chainsaws and other power tools may be required.
