Summary
Under limited supervision, the Parks Maintenance Technician performs general duties related to the unlocking and locking of park gates and facilities daily, maintenance, upkeep and repair of city parks, grounds trails and recreation facilities. Assists in preparations for, and clean-up after special events. May be required to work mornings, evenings and weekends. This position may supervise seasonal part-time laborers.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Drives city vehicle to different parks, trails, and facilities.
- Locks and unlocks park gates and facilities daily.
- Provides customer service in a friendly manner and provide public with information related to various city services.
- Empties trash cans in city parks, sidewalks, parking lots, right-of-ways and trails.
- Completes daily cleaning of restrooms, pavilions and other facilities.
- Performs basic maintenance of city parks and other facilities as required.
- Reports park and patron issues and other concerns to Supervisor.
- Identifies and reports vandalism and graffiti.
- May act as liaison and point of contact during some facility/picnic shelter rentals and volunteer activities.
- Observes all safety standards, practices, and warnings.
- Maintains tools and equipment and stores them properly.
- Participates in staff meetings, appropriate seminars, trainings and special meetings as per direction of supervisor.
- Assists with special events as directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
High school diploma or GED AND must be at least 18 years of age; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Fundamental safety procedures, guidelines, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Safe and efficient operation of facility maintenance equipment such as mops, auto-scrubber, ladders, cleaning chemicals, various hand tools and gas and electric power tools.
- Proper use of cleaning supplies and chemicals.
- Operation of basic office equipment and Work Order Software (Microsoft Office, Facility Dude, fax, copy machine, etc.)
- Lawn equipment use and maintenance, including edger, weed eater, lawn mower, etc.
- Customer service best practices.
Skill in:
- Basic operation of City vehicles including pickup trucks, 1-ton pickup trucks and trailers and UTV style utility vehicles.
- Determining the appropriate tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Operation of various hand tools, gas and electric power tools and other park equipment.
- Working in varied environmental conditions requiring walking on and through all types of terrain and trails, including asphalt-paved surfaces, gravel surfaces, bare-earth, and forested areas.
- Operate basic office equipment (computer, Microsoft Office, fax, copy machine, etc.)
- Problem solving conflicts and disputes as applicable.
Ability to:
- Evaluate situations and make decisions.
- Handle stressful situations in a calm and logical manner.
- To carry a city cell phone and respond to calls.
- Complete Incident Report Form immediately after a situation occurs and route to Supervisor.
- Provide information to park patrons or interested parties within his/her scope of knowledge or refer to the appropriate person.
- Perform in accordance with training manuals and safety guidelines.
- Work as a team player, maintain good working relationships with other employees and support overall mission and vision of the city.
- Perform basic cleaning and janitorial duties.
- Perform physical labor including emptying trash cans and operating mechanical equipment for extended periods of time.
- Regularly lift 60 pounds, materials in excess of this weight are lifted with assistance.
- React quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Interact with others using tact, patience and courtesy; maintain composure when interacting with angry or upset individuals.

- Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
