The SPCA of Hancock County (501c(3) non-profit organization) is looking for a compassionate, reliable, and experienced individual to join our team as our Animal Care Operations Manager. The Operations Manager is responsible for supervising the operations of the shelter with regard to animal care and animal health functions, including supervision of all animal care staff. This position is responsible for ensuring the humane handling and care for all animals in the shelter with adherence to state and local laws and industry best practices regarding animal welfare and sheltering. The Operations Manager ensures the safety, sanitation and upkeep of the facility, provides staff training to new and current animal care employees, and oversees the medical care of all animals under the care of the SPCAHC. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong ability to multi-task, work independently and with a team, effectively manage employees, and perform medical treatments with experience and knowledge. Prior veterinary experience is required for this position.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Overseeing the Animal Care Program of companion animals to include cats and dogs..
- Manage, mentor and inspire staff of 6-8 Animal Care Associates while creating camaraderie within the team.
- Monitoring the physical, emotional and behavioral health of shelter animals.
- Coordinating, with approved local veterinary clinics, to schedule appointments including spay/neuter, sick visits, and rabies vaccinations. Coordinate care with volunteer in-house veterinarian(s).
- Overseeing and performing medical treatments of shelter animals, i.e. vaccinating, deworming, microchipping, venipuncture, basic wound care and bandaging, etc. as well as maintaining accurate and thorough medical records for all animals.
- Oversight on the maintenance of intake, daily rounds and the medical records on all animals with help from Animal Care Associates.
- Training and supervising all animal care employees to ensure the highest quality care of shelter animals, as well as ensuring the safety of all staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Conducting periodic meetings/training with staff to review updated animal care and medical procedures and policies.
- Provide daily deep animal health checks and intake exams with Senior Animal Care staff. Ensuring each animal has a wellness observation done first thing every morning and lastly. Teaching staff how to do such, as well as checking in frequently with staff on shelter environment wellness.
- Work with Office Manager to order and keep inventory of supplies.
Requirements:
- Prior experience in a professional veterinary setting. Including but not limited to; knowledge of and demonstrated the practice of safe animal restraint, knowledge of basic animal behavior, knowledge of commonly used veterinary medications and demonstrated administration techniques, ability to collect animal specimens to perform in-house point-of-care testing and prepare samples for reference labs, knowledge of contagious disease control, management, and sanitation, etc.
- Ability to safely work with potentially hurt, distressed, or otherwise fractious animals.
- Demonstrated prior successful management of a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule with on-call hours. This includes weekends and some holidays, as well as possible animal emergencies after hours.
- Must possess basic computer skills. Familiarity with Petstablished a plus.
- Strong organizational skills are a must.
- Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Director.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs, stand or walk for long periods of time, and be able to bend, kneel, or crouch repetitively.
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Ability to reliably commute to work.
