About Us - For teachers, by teachers, about teaching
STEMteachersNYC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting a Professional Learning Community of STEM teachers. Our mission is to cultivate excellence in STEM teaching and promote deep understanding and success for students through innovative, teacher-led professional development. Founded in 2011 by 25 teachers, the organization provides professional development for elementary, middle, and high school teachers from throughout the New York Tri-State area and beyond through workshops of varying lengths on weekends and during the summer. Its teacher-led, adaptive approach to professional development, combining pedagogy with depth of content, distinguishes it from other professional development programs. This is an organization for teachers, by teachers, about teaching. STEMteachersNYC members and workshop leaders care passionately about their craft and are dedicated to improving outcomes for their students.
All of the organization’s professional learning workshops are developed and delivered by teachers. Participants consistently report that this unique opportunity to collaborate with peers and learn from practicing teachers provides the best professional development they have experienced in their careers. STEMteachersNYC workshops are built around the classroom experience of the leader(s), delivered to peers, and are structured around pedagogy, student thinking, and the context of participant-teachers in the room.
STEMteachersNYC continues to pursue its mission of excellence in STEM teaching and deep understanding and success for students through teacher-led professional development. We have returned to in-person workshops and continue to offer virtual workshops featuring hands-on experiments. A library of vetted teaching tools is available on-line. Our evolving Leader Pathway has expanded to include a tailored focus on helping new leaders develop their workshop planning and facilitation skills. Our Professional Learning Community now includes pre-service STEM teachers studying at Brooklyn College, where they can earn a credit for their participation. Our workshops, led by practicing teachers, provide support, help keep STEM teachers in the profession, strengthen the interaction between the classroom and our workshops, and improve STEM teaching.
