Therapeutic Specialist works directly with the individuals to improve their overall quality of life by proactively mitigating behaviors by meeting the intrinsic needs of individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities who have a secondary diagnosis of mental illness. The goal for this position is to establish a consistent, positive relationship and coordinate comprehensive Mental Health and other supports, thus reducing the need for communication through negative behavior. Manage a support team that will assist with performing the functions of this position.
Proactively assist in the development of supports to address negative behaviors, train staff on working with the individual, evaluate the effectiveness of supports, and adjust as necessary. Coordinate, attend, and document Mental Health appointments such as psychiatric, counseling, etc. Track individual's progress by monitoring medication changes and side effects as well as the efficiency of counseling. Make recommendations for counseling where needed. Assist the people we support to overcome barriers and challenges to establishing and maintaining a network of relationships and valued social roles. Function as the primary contact for interdisciplinary teams such as psychiatrists, counseling, PBSF, OT, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and/or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
Must have a passion for and desire to work with people with intellectual disabilities and other physical or Mental Health diagnoses. Knowledge of basic human physical, mental, and psychological needs. Knowledge of simple health and safety precautions. Knowledge of and ability to perform simple nursing care, first-aid, behavior management, and personal and environmental hygiene. Ability to write daily progress, document goals, outcomes, and progress as well as behavior reports using a professional, objective style and voice. Ability to use computers and other electronic equipment. Ability to interact with individuals, community members, and other treatment team members. Ability to read and comprehend training manuals. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. course of action. Ability to learn basic operation and maintenance of adaptive equipment. Ability to be supportive and patient. Ability to be a team player. Ability to observe, record, and report participant’s behavior, attitude, and physical condition. Must have previous supervisory or leadership experience.
Minimum Requirements:
A minimum of 5 years experience working with individuals with IDD including PCP development, working with interdisciplinary teams, and completing documentation for DBHDS. Bachelor’s degree in human services field preferred. Previous experience as an IDD case manager preferred as well as coordinating services, and working with dually diagnosed individuals with IDD/Mental Illness. Prior experience with other therapeutic support providers that would improve individual outcomes such as sensory, PBSF, OT, PT therapies, etc. Must be organized, able to maintain a calm demeanor, and function in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines.
