SCHOOL COUNSELOR – MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The School Counselor - Mental Health Support position will work closely with the building administrative team as well as the building counseling team to coordinate, facilitate, and implement Mental Health Support services. The School Counselor - Mental Health Support position will also work with a district-level administrative team and lead/coordinator position to coordinate consistent support services across the District. The School Counselor - Mental Health
Support position will provide emotional support and foster a safe and successful learning environment for students at the middle and high school levels. The primary focus will be on building students’ capacity for academic success and positive social and emotional well- being.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The School Counselor-Mental Health Support position will work closely with the building administrative team to do the following:
- Provide individual Mental Health counseling
- Address bullying/harassment
- Provide education (prevention and awareness via classes/presentation on topics such as anger/stress management, cyber safety, etc.)
- Develop youth leadership and empowerment skills
- Facilitate restorative justice and conflict resolution
- Provide crisis assistance (i.e. family death)
- Provide truancy intervention
- Provide Mental Health resources
- Liaison to/for community resources; next steps involving short term and/or long term therapy or intervention; advocacy
- Provide small group Mental Health counseling (i.e. anger/stress management, girl/boy issues, self- esteem, grief, relationships, etc.)
- Address Mental Health and mental illness
- Address risky behaviors (i.e. alcohol/drug use)
- Address depression and anxiety (i.e. suicide ideation)
- Address abuse (i.e. physical, emotional, sexual)
- Maintain and track documentation of Mental Health Support for students
- May provide some academic counseling duties and other duties specific to building needs, if time permits
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of:
- current practices, techniques, and methods of teaching; the principles of educational testing and principles and methods of remedial education;
- effective means of supervision and knowledge of counseling;
- the principles and methods of counseling research.
- Ability to apply modern methods to pupils functioning at the elementary and/or secondary school level;
- maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children, adolescents, or adults of normal and/or impaired learning ability; maintain proper discipline; and maintain working relationships with staff and students.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED:
Master's Degree from an accredited institution.

Eleven-month contract

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to use and operate effectively various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Work is typically performed in a school setting including; classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required.Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone, email, and in person as necessary.
