Primary Purpose of this Position:
The North Carolina Zoo is seeking a self-motivated and team-oriented Maintenance/Construction Technician IIIfor its Construction Crew and General Maintenance Sections. The section includes the construction of animal caging and small in-house projects, general building and park maintenance.
This is a lead working position which reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor with oversight and responsibility for caging & hydraulics and small construction projects. Responsibilities will overlap at times. Position makes repairs and alterations to buildings and park infrastructure such as installation and repair of drywall, doors, flooring, ceilings, decks, asphalt and concrete. It also involves the fabrication, installation and maintenance of caging and door operation systems including installation and repair of hydraulic, operated doors. Position will be required to perform other tasks as needed and may be reassigned to a different group of trades such as plumbing, mechanical and/or electrical depending on the needs of the organization.
Job/Physical Requirements:
  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid NC Driver's License to drive a state vehicle.
  • Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.
  • Must be available to work after hours and weekend hours when necessary. Required to work weekend and holidays on-call rotations.
  • Must be available for on-call and emergency call-back within 45 minutes.
  • Considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days, during zoo emergencies, and may be called to work special events.
  • Must be able to regularly and safely lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally with or without an accommodation; bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day with or without an accommodation,
  • Endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.
  • Must be able to operate a forklift and other construction equipment with training.

  • Demonstrated experience of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in the general maintenance and/or repair of buildings or in steel fabrication and/or construction principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use and care of tools from various trades including the operation of common types of metalworking and/or woodworking equipment.
  • Proven computer skills sufficient for e-mail, work order processing, time entries, performance evaluations, and/or product research, etc.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
and
two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas;

Division Information:
The North Carolina Zoo exists for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of all of North Carolina's citizens and visitors to the zoo. The mission of the zoo is to encourage the understanding of and commitment to the conservation of the world's wildlife and wild places through the recognition of the interdependence of people and nature. The Zoo displays, conserves and protects representative examples of natural beauty, plant and animal species and ecological features of the North American and African regions of the world through the presentation of live animal exhibits from these regions.
The primary purpose of the Physical Plant Maintenance Section is to maintain Zoo facilities and equipment to keep them in good condition and proper working order. This section will construct small structures such as animal caging, decking, and small building structures, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, physical plant maintenance and vehicle shop. It is responsible for seven major exhibit buildings, five restaurants, three gift shops, ten sets of restrooms, three support buildings, seven greenhouses and numerous animal holding areas. It is also responsible for servicing and maintenance of all equipment including trams, buses, trucks, vans, utility vehicles, tractors, bobcats, mowers, welders, and blowers and a variety of other equipment as well as minor painting and paving repairs.
