Position Details
Salary scale shown is minimum pay rate prior to the 2% CDL premium, and the maximum pay rate including premium pay and highest longevity pay, applicable only after 20 years of service.
The staff hired into this position will be brought in at Step 1 of the 6-step scale, which is $4,805.34 month (~$27.72/hour). If the new staff member already has their CDL, the 2% premium will be effective right away. Otherwise, the 2% premium will be added to wages after the CDL has been obtained.
This position is represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 117, and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is effective 1/1/23 - 12/31/25.
The following future pay increases have been negotiated:
January 1, 2024: 3% increase
January 1, 2025: 3% increase
This job announcement is open continuously and will generate an eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies throughout 2024 in our Public Works divisions: Sewer, Storm, Streets, Vegetation, Water Distribution, and Water Operations.

Selection Process

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take an in-person assessment test (Mechanical Aptitude Test, 1.5 hours). Applicants must receive a passing score to be placed on the eligibility list for a screening interview with hiring managers.Applicants with a passing score may be invited to a formal interview and practical testing when there are open vacancies. The eligibility listestablished for thisposition is generally good for 6 months.
Testing
Our next round of mechanical aptitude testing will take place on January 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th. As additional testing dates are scheduled, this posting will be updated.
Primary Duties
This position requiresperforming general labor and semi-skilled manual work in the construction, maintenance and repair of City facilities, utilities and equipment. This involves a variety of tasks which may subject the employee to heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity.
Employees are expected to perform all of the duties of the Maintenance Worker I class as assigned. The list below is not meant to be all inclusive, and the full job description can be viewed . Staff will have more detailed descriptions for each of the divisions to review when attending the mechanical aptitude test.
Some primary duties include:
- Operating and/or driving various equipment and machinery including but not limited to: pickups, one-yard loaders or less, tractors and implements, sign truck, pipe pusher, rollers, jackhammers, air compressors, concrete saws, chains saws, all mowers except tractor mowers used to cut right-of-ways, blowers, leaf machines, hand equipment, chippers, small power equipment, generators, sprayers and spreaders, forklifts, and V Box sanders.
- Being responsible for the operation of dump trucks; paint trucks; and/or a combination of a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross weight rating of the combined vehicle(s) is more than 26,000 pounds, a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver), or any size vehicle which carries placarding amounts of hazardous materials.
- Performing minor mechanical repairs on such equipment.
- Ordering materials, and interfacing with sales personnel and vendors.
- Initiating work orders and repair orders and maintaining accurate records of time and materials used in work.
- Interacting courteously with other employees, utility customers, vendors and the public.
- Correctly and safely operating all equipment and tools used in assigned division.
Minimum Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have:
- AHigh School Diploma or equivalent; AND
- One (1) year of full-time, paid related work experience such as construction, general labor, etc.; AND
- A valid driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.
*If necessary for assigned work, an employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Operator's license, DSHS Water Supply Certification, First Aid Certification, Flagging Certification, Forklift Certification and/or Defensive Driving Certification, or other required certification or license.
