Job Summary
Perform maintenance, repair, and oversight of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) equipment, including but not limited to: watering purification and distribution systems, environmental monitoring systems, biological safety cabinets and animal transfer stations, animal cage racks and miscellaneous equipment, as well as quality control of animal watering systems.

Occupational Health and Safety
As a safeguard for the employee and the animals, DLAR employees may be subject to vaccines, tests, physical examinations prior to working with specific animals or animal populations as required by research needs, including, but not limited to:
- TB testing and clearance;
- Hepatitis B (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
- Rabies (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
- Tetanus (current vaccination less than 10 years);
- Measles (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
- Periodic physical examinations including respiratory fit tests);
- Other vaccines or testing as required by EOHW standards.
Hazard Exposure
The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions. Specifically, employees may be exposed to potentially hazardous noise, dust, chemicals, extreme heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure of any of the above is dependent on assigned duties. Some aspects of this position may expose the incumbent to potentially zoonotic and other biohazardous agents. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment may be required and will be provided when required, accompanied by appropriate training.
Work Performed
- Perform general maintenance and repair on DLAR owned equipment.
- Work closely with Facilities Engineering and Operations as needed.
- Coordinate regular maintenance activities as necessary with outside vendors.
- Maintain operation of automatic watering systems, environmental monitoring system and reverse osmosis water filtration systems. Respond to and determine nature and corrective action of alarms from the environmental monitoring and automatic watering systems.
- Maintain and perform safe and efficient operation of the tissue digester.
- Identify and use the proper materials to build and repair housing and support equipment
- Coordinate painting, building, and repair projects with area operation managers to minimize any noxious fumes, noise, and stress on the animals.
- Perform routine installation (using proper techniques) of minor plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Performing minor repair work involving use of welding equipment.
- Maintain and repair racks, drinking valves, water distribution systems, RO machines, environmental sensors, etc.
- Get equipment specific training as needed or when available.
- Train DLAR staff on how to use and maintain equipment, as needed.
- Maintain equipment inventory.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Other Requirements
- Valid NC Driver’s License is required.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts.
State of NC contractor's license in a specific trade may be required or preferred.
Experience
Minimum of four years maintenance and repair experience related to the specific equipment or four years of trades experience with at least one year related experience.
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Valid N.C. Driver's license is required.
