Why does the job exist?
This position assists the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Infrastructure, Bridge Design Unit Supervisor, with designing, preparing, and providing bridge and structural plans for various transportation projects statewide.
How does it get done?
Essential Duties:
- Assist with designing, preparing, and providing bridge and structural plans for various bridge and structural projects on a statewide basis.
- Assist with scoping and planning out bridge and structural projects.
- Provide support to NMDOT District offices on their bridge and structural needs.
- Prepare drawings using AutoCAD, that accurately reflect the existing site conditions and the impact of the proposed design.
- Review fabricator shop drawings for components of bridges and other structures under construction to verify accuracy and compliance with the contract documents.
- Perform miscellaneous bridge/structural related tasks as directed by the Design Unit Supervisor and the State Bridge Engineer.

NMDOT Districts and Regions, and the traveling public.
Ideal Candidate
- Experience in Bridge design, construction and/or engineering.
- Experience with bridge/structural design calculations and plan preparation.
- The ability to understand design specifications.
- The ability to write technical reports.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements
- All applicants for the Engineer Professional I, II and Engineer Manager classifications must be licensed in accordance with Engineering and Surveying Practice Act, Sections 61-23-1
- Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing. (NMBLPEPS: New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Professional Surveyors)
- You must include your license or certificate number in the "License" section of the application form.
Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
In state travel may be required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
